Whatever Google News popped up first (emphasis mine) wrote: In most states, the greatest challenge to buying wine is convincing the clerk at the checkout that the face on the ID you present is really you. Pity the poor residents of Pennsylvania, who not only have to struggle with arcane regulations on the sale of alcohol, but now have to pass a high-tech exam by a Pronto wine vending machine before they can buy a bottle of wine at the grocery store. The process is this: you step up to the wine vending machine in a grocery or general store, such as Walmart. The machine is linked via closed-circuit TV to the Liquor Control Board in the state capital of Reading, where a real, live employee (in what must be a mind-numbingly boring job) sits at a terminal. You scan your ID, usually your driver's license, and the state worker compares the image of you transmitted from the camera in the vending machine to the picture on your ID. If he buys the match, you're halfway home. Next, you must breath into a breathalyzer built into the machine. If the results show you aren't already half in the bag, you'll be permitted to buy that bottle of wine. The wine vending machines, about the size of four soda vending machines, are an attempt by the state to meet the demands of its residents for more convenient sales of alcohol. Except for these machines, wine can only be purchased at state stores. That's right. Walmart has conned the State into dedicating taxpayer-funded manpower to facilitate their sale of alcohol. |

Except for these machines, wine can only be purchased at state stores. Like they said, "demands of the residents". So I guess that is what a majority of the taxpayers want. If a State store is closed, there is no other way to get wine. Alcohol isn't so readily available in PA after hours. |

I've heard of less intelligent laws... ...damn few, and they were along the lines of not being able to park a camel inside a church, but still. |

I prefer my state's laws on purchasing alcohol. Whenever, whereever, as long as you're 21. |

CA shuts down alcohol sales after something like 2 am but that's fine. Otherwise it's painless to get pretty much anything I want. |

Who actually buys wine from convenient stores or chain stores? They are overly priced and really not that good (unless it's vastly different from over here). |

I shudder to think what a $2 wine would taste like =P If I wasn't so opposed to having my naked image scanned, I might do another trip over there next year. As I'm anal about taking pictures and submitting my finger print, I'm doing asia again. =P Maybe when you guys fall into anarchy, I could sneak over and try a $2 wine ^-^ |

I am intrigued by this whole idea of cheap wine thing. Got anything to suggest in the semi sweet white range? |

It's called a wine rack my fellow Pennsylvanians. Then a 30 min trip down the road to Delaware to stock it up tax free. F'ing Puritan liquor laws- which will never change as long as the gov has a lock on the liquor sales. |

Charles Shaw, commonly known as Two Buck Chuck, sold at Trader Joe's and I assume other places, puts out a decent table wine, not quite good but drinkable. They buy a lot of other vineyards over production that doesn't meet the home vineyard's standards, blend the wines to the standards of Chuck's tasters, then bottle it and send it out at $1.99 a bottle. You want better quality, you buy a better brand, this is not meant to be high quality stuff you buy a case of and sit on it for your toddler's eventual wedding. This is stuff you open up and drink with your mate or buds for a simple every day dinner. Most alcoholics I know love it. |

These are becoming very popular out here. Maybe you wine loving Pennsylvanians should consider investing in something like this. http://tinyurl.com/2wu54r7 |

Right now I have a 16 bottle rack, but would love to have a larger climate controlled unit to keep a bigger selection. My only recourse right now is to drink it quickly to protect it's flavor! |

I like Fox Brook merlot..$1.99 a bottle at Lucky's. Their chardonnay isn't too bad either, although I don't care for white so much we always keep a few bottles on hand when hubby's brother spends the night. |

I have four cases in my cellar for entertaining large groups. In my estimation they do the best job with their cab. |

My closest state store is open on Sundays. So far, it's never been closed when I've needed to get some wine. |

I don't understand the label "state stores"... does that mean the state actually owns and operates the stores, or is it a reference to the store having a state alcohol license? And in either case, how does this system make more sense than just eliminating the blue laws that restrict allowable sales times? |

PA has absolutely retarded alcohol dispensary laws, even slightly more retarded than New Jersey and that's saying something. That said, I have no qualms with such retardation since it is confined to Pennsylvania. If the denizens of one of the most historically important states want to continue to subject themselves to aggravatingly retarded laws, shame on them. |
