Came across some supposedly popular rap music by several different artists today...full of explicit lyrics like Spoiler: What possible intrinsic artistic value does this have? Is there something I'm missing? Is this some sort of gangsta/thug angst? It seems pretty much like just a bunch of nasty, vulgar, gratuitous, crap to me. There are some rap songs I like because they express anger and rage in a creative and powerful way and about something that is WORTH getting angry over....but most of it is just crap about mindlessly shooting people, drinking, and forcing "hos" to give it up. |

@ LK: Oddly enough, this same observation occurred to me when I was over in San Francisco a few months ago. At a couple points during our stay, we were blasted out by someone cranking out hardcore rap on their car stereo, and it was nothing but a string of obscenities/insults. This style of rap holds no fascination for me whatsoever. Profanity should be reserved to make actual points in song lyrics, not just to throw them out there to be edgy. Good rap = artists like Eminem, DMX, and Beastie Boys (although I see the Beasties as more hip hop than rap). |

There's a lot of misogyny is some of that music. Welcome to whats popular, confused white female. That's why I stick to nerd-core hip hop. |

Well, it's really beyond gross and I don't offend that easily with profanity and stuff but, for example, go read the lyrics to "No Hands" by Roscoe Dash: Spoiler: I can't believe there are kids, yes kids, actually listening to this. This is beyond an F-you here are and there or old school allusions to getting laid, this is hard core NASTY, explicit, stuff and that was one of the more mild songs. |

Yeah, I know. It's like rap music suddenly became all vulgar, isn't it? Well, here's a gem from 1999. You might recognize the song: Spoiler: Spoiler: Spoiler: Spoiler: Spoiler: Spoiler: |

Every generation is doing things to shock the previous generation, so on and so forth. Remember when wearing skirts above your knees were considered unacceptable? |

Nasty because you read it all in four minutes, or nasty because I insinuated as much in my post? |

I don't like it, don't care for it. It irks me when I see parents with small children cranking stuff like this on the radio. I don't think the government needs to step in though. |

Why is this in Hellfire? Seems a more appropriate topic for Entertainment.... Explicit lyrics don't a Hellfire topic make.... |

Hip hop music is full of albums with material pontificating on the more *ahem* academic issues in society. However, having an insane song with disrespectful lyrics bordering on rape and murder fantasies is just entertainment and a bit of an outlet. There are days when I just want to drag the person in the car in front of me out of the drivers seat and cave his/her skull in with the 30mm crescent wrench I keep in my hatch. But listening to a **** up song at the gym to blow off the steam seems like a better option after the urge to kill lowers. Just my best guess. Some of those **** up tracks had some pretty cool rhythmic patterns in the rhymes. Here's a fairly recent (released in early November) but not nearly as explicit: Hardly TI's best rapping or Pharrell's best production ... but TI's bad rapping is better than 95% of all the rest of the material signed, independent or otherwise. |

2 Live Crew's "We Want Some Pussy" was released in 1987. What happened that somebody noticed offensive rap lyrics today? |

I really hate rap. (Except for Will Smith's old stuff, who had the good sense to follow his grandmother's advice about writing music.) |

As a young male growing up as the same time rap began to gain widespread appeal, I have to tell you that 2 live Crew was considered the embodiment of all that was evil at the time. I remember schools advising parents to go through their kids tape collections. Of course we all just kept dub tapes of 2Live and later on NWA unmarked. It was a wide gap from RUN DMC to get into 2Live territory. Hell I don't think that most folks would have known what rap was if it wasn't for the Aerosmith/RUN DMC version of "Walk this Way". Some would say Blondie/Fab5 were the begining but I don't think folks recgonized that as rap. Now the pendulum has swung all the way to the other side. It's mostly vulgarity and obscentiy, with the actual storytellers being rare. I now consider the genre dead. All it is now is a formula. Combine 1 rapper with 1 part made up credibility, add 2 parts production and 1 part T-Pain vocoder track = $$. Sometimes a gem (Eminem/X-hibit type) pops up and will have longevity. Most of the time I doubt these "artists" are able to pay back their advances. |

I would like to point out this lovely little ditty from the wonderful 1990 release by 2 Live Crew; Banned in the USA, and my personal favorite (I actually really do like this song for some reason, I cannot place). I give you.... Spoiler: |

Not to be pedantic, but where have you been, LK? I can't really relate to the music. Hip-hop is all about being the coolest person in the room, which I have never been. And I don't know why anyone would pay money to listen a song about how you just bought them a boat, and they're AWESOME. Also, move to entertainment or rants imo. |

It is very interesting interacting with women who grew up in rap-centric cultures. A lot, (not ALL) genuinely believe that's what they exist for. |

It seems a transparant attempt to sound tough, non-conformist and cool. Makes them sound childish and unintelligent. |

Can move things to Hellfire without the OPs request, but moving them away from Hellfire seems a bit off- she obviously wanted it here for a reason, not like she's new to the board. I just can't fathom why, especially since she doesn't usually like posting here. |

Consider the possibility that this was brought to Kate's attention by an old lady at church ***** about the decaying moral fabric of society, and it starts to look very much like a Hellfire issue. |

Wrong Hellfire I say we combine it with the "Completely Unrelated Boobies" thread in General, myself. Related themes- the use of suggestive themes to sell stuff. |
