They are making the retailer collect the sales tax that Illinois residents should be reporting and paying (assuming Illinois previously handled these transactions the same way Ohio does).

In Ohio (and presumably in other states) you are supposed to pay sales tax on online purchases. If the retailer does not charge such tax then the tax is supposed to be applied and reported on your state income tax return.

And almost nobody does that. Even if they do get caught, it is a crime of omission, not commission. I was supposed to what? Really? I didn't know, sorry, What do we do now?

Does Ohio law state you have to report purchases made outside of Ohio and pay the sales tax on them?

Irrc If you pay sales tax on them then they consider it a wash (since people come into Ohio from out of state and pay sales tax on items they buy here). However if you don't pay sales tax (like most online transactions) then you owe it.
