Times article regarding a Department of Justice ruling about the attempts of a NC town to eliminate party affiliation for local elections. |

What the hell? I don't know what to make of this, to be amused, offended, disgusted? |

William Barker wrote: "Based on the fact that the voters voted overwhelmingly for it, I would like to see us challenge it based on that fact. My fight is solely based on fighting what the voters voted on," he said. "It bothers me, even though I'm on the winning side now, that you have a small group, an outside group coming in and saying, 'Your vote doesn't matter.' " Quote: Mr. Cooke said his group does not take a position on this issue and would not disclose his personal stance, but expressed skepticism about the Justice Department's involvement.

It is only with great size and resources at their disposal to waste that they might find the boredom and time to do such stomping. |

We're still trying to get rid of partisan elections in Tucson. We finally got rid of (well, next year's election anyway) city-wide elections for individual wards. This year, we still have a ward-specific primary but city-wide general. Democrats don't want this changed of course and fought it tooth and nail. It took our state government to step in and change that. |

Kinda hard to find any positive spin on this one. Unless you are a fanatic Dem in Kingston, I guess. |

We can't get rid of parties! If we do that, how on earth will people know for whom to cast their vote? |

Democrat! is the only way for anyone to know who carries the official black/gay/feminist seal of approval. It's not at all unlike the way Republican! was used to show the official Christian seal of approval during various administrations. |

Quote: The department ruled that white voters in Kinston will vote for blacks only if they are Democrats and that therefore the city cannot get rid of party affiliations for local elections because that would violate black voters' right to elect the candidates they want. Apparently the rest of us just get the right to vote, but black voters get the right to actually elect the candidate they want. That's right, if you're black you have the right to have your guy win. |

Re reading this, this is one of the most horribly racist condescending things not coming out from behind a Klan hood. Unless I am wrong its essentially stating that Black voters need a D next to a candidates name to know how to vote. How patronizing could you get? |

Actually, I believe the position of the Department of Justice is that without the option to vote a party ballot, white voters who support the liberal parties, such as the Democrats, might be tempted to put aside that left leaning position and instead vote along racial lines and bypass the black candidate on the ballot in favor of the white conservative. This could quite possibly be the first instance in which the government has achieved complete racial equality, as every identifiable group within this district has been equally insulted by this ruling. |
