Quote:
Rome (CNN) -- An apparently agitated passenger attacked a flight attendant on Alitalia Flight 329 from Paris to Rome late Sunday and asked that the flight be diverted to Tripoli, Libya, the airline said.
Other flight attendants immobilized the attacker, Alitalia said, and the plane and its 131 passengers landed safely at Rome's Fiumicino airport, where the attacker was taken into police custody.
The flight attendant was taken to the airport emergency room for a check-up, the airline said.
Italy's state-run ANSA news agency reported the attacker was a man from Kazakhstan and that he attacked the flight attendant with nail clippers.

Hmmm... Just a side-question (and it's serious), why do you need nail clippers when travelling? Unless you are like George Clooney's character from Up-in-the-Air do you ever run into a nail-clipping emergency?

I was thinking the same thing...clip your nails before you go.

I think that's beside the point, but yeah.

I think it's worth noting (PAY ATTENTION TSA) that nobody was killed and the attacker was easily restrained.

Seriously, though, how crazy do you have to be to think you can hijack a plane with nail clippers?

You don't need nail-clippers on the plane, but it's one more thing you can't bring with you on a trip if you want to avoid checking your bags.

Fun fact: Boy Scout high adventure camps stock tampons in their trading posts due to their usefulness at treating nosebleeds.

You may wonder what this has to do with bringing nail-clippers on a plane. Well, it serves to illustrate that many objects are multi-purpose. Why would you need nail-clippers on a plane? Well, just because you can't think of a reason to use nail clippers other than to make your hands look pretty doesn't mean such reasons don't exist. I used to use them to cut fishing line. I also use them to clip those little plastic things that hold price tags onto clothes.

While I don't think banning nail clippers is called for, I still can't think of any use they would have on a plane that couldn't be dealt with before one takes off or after one lands.

The issue here is the silliness of banning nail clippers; not that they have some incredible veriety of usefulness in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Towelesque fashion

That is a fun fact.

Here is another, blow-torches can be used for dozens of things. Should I complain that I can't take them on a plane?

Is it ridiculous that a nail-clipper is a "weapon"? Sure.
Is there any use for them so vital that you need to be to be allowed to travel with them? Or can you just pick up a pair at your destination for $1?

Now if you want to complain about the liquid levels allowed to travel, I can totally get on board with that. Just saying we should pick our battles and reserve righteous indignation :)

I don't fly. I'm just commenting on the general attitude of, "Well what do you need nail-clippers for, anyway? Clip your nails before you go!" They are the sort of device that is just generally handy to have in your pocket. A blowtorch is not, by virtue of not really fitting in your pocket to begin with.

That seems to support the decision to ban them on planes, really. "It's not that we don't want you to cut your nails, we don't want terrorists to use them to attack others and try to take over the plane"!

And, since there ARE nut jobs that do so, obviously, one can't logically disagree. An emotional disagreement is, of course, always fodder for a few pages of posts.

What do you need clothes for when you're flying?
All personal possessions should be bagged and stowed in the cargo hold and people should be issued paper robes and slippers prior to going through security. It's the only thing that will keep us safe.

I don't need clothes, but I do need you to wear clothes.

The greatest majority of folks I've been on planes with fall in that category.

You could totally strangle someone with that robe belt.

I know how to make rope from plant fibers, pocket lint, and paper napkins. I could very easily turn that robe into something strong enough to strangle someone with in under 20 minutes.

Well, I'm terribly sorry, but you can't have a robe then.

Darn.

On the other hand, you're good - keep the robe.

I'd rather be strangled than you go without. :)

I'm guessing she wouldn't be wearing it while fashioning her paper strangler anyway. I'd let he work on it for about 15 minutes then take it away from her. Win. Win.

I don't see how fighting with nail clippers would be preferable to fighting with nothing. They make a very poor weapon. There are several things that would make a much better weapon and are allowed on planes. Laptop power cable, hot coffee, a backpack full of heavy books, a pen. All those would be a much better weapon than finger nail clippers.

Shhh! they'll hear you and ban all those things too.

Honestly, if they're going to ban every item someone tries to use as a weapon on a flight, its only a matter of time before someone attacks someone with a pair of women's panties (which should be as effective as nail clippers), and then they're not going to let us wear panties in the air.
