FOREST PARK, Ga. -- A new law in metro Atlanta will limit breast feeding in public.
On Monday night, Forest Park passed a public indecency ordinance to prevent public nudity. Previously, the city only had a public indecency ordinance that covered adult entertainment businesses.
According to the law, no woman can breast feed anyone older than 2 years old in public. City manager John Parker called the law a proactive step.
“It sets up a process whereby we can try to control nudity throughout the entire city," Parker said.

A couple of my friends are up in arms over this one, but personally, I think that after the age of 2, breastfeeding is no longer necessary for survival. And if I'm not mistaken, there are not any huge benefits to either mother or child to the continuation of breastfeeding after the age of 2.
That aside, I have no problem with people breastfeeding in public, but seeing a 3 or 4 year old on the boob is kind of awkward and uncomfortable.

Remember this?

Uh, you should be able to feed your kids however you wish, provided they are maintaining acceptable nutrition standards, but...

Yeah, creepy and weird.

Creepy, weird, and awkward for others? Yeah. But that's my own personal cultural bias speaking. I can't see any rational reason why breast feeding a three year old in public should be illegal if breast feeding a two year old isn't. Just...leave people alone. I don't know why that's so hard.

Their town their rules. No such thing as a right to public consumption.

As long as no one is allowed to eat or drink in public that's a powerful point.

When you start eating your soup and sandwich off a bare breast, then we'll talk.

So it's the fact that there's a breast involved that's the issue? So legislate the morality desired by specifying no skin of the breasts may be exposed. You might run into problems with swimsuits and button-down blouses or tank tops then though. Maybe legislate that no nipples or if that's not enough how about no areolae can be exposed? Then again, there are already laws on the books dealing with that. Why do people want more laws?

I know that some may find these offensive, that must be why there's now a law in GA against it:

I don't particularly see that bare boobs are nearly as much of a social ill as older children still breastfeeding. That said, I have no problem with cities and states making their own nudity/decency laws in accordance with what the majority there wants. If people want to legislate morality, let them waste their time trying.

What's the social ill of a child that's 731 days old breastfeeding? Or 750? Or 800? 900?

As to the legislation of morality I agree completely. Here, I am wondering why otherwise rational individuals can't see the forest for the trees.

Sounds like they are starting to embrace sharia law. One step closer to veils.

I think they outlawed it because they are upset that they cannot nom a breast in public.

Jealousy, coupled with a latent need to get in other people's business - I can see that.

Those smilies are the best I could do for a double nom.

Social ill in the sense that it's not good child rearing, not in the sense of ZOMG MAKE IT ILLEGAL AFTER BIRTHDAY NUMBER 2!

Would you guys be okay with an adult (lets say 22) sucking on the breast of his mother for milk in public?

This thread title is misleading. You can still breastfeed in public. Just as long as the child is under 2. So it hasn't been outlawed.

The better question there would be to ask whether the adult would be okay with sucking on his mother's breast for milk in public.

Why does the presence of a breast change the game?

Because we're a country founded by Puritans.

I can't eat where ever I want. Many places have "no food or drink" allowed signs. So businesses and localities can make their own laws about this. For the record I don't really care about public breast feeding as much as I do local sovereignty. They've made their choice and if the people don't like it they can elect new council members or vote with their feet.

If you want to debate the larger public nudity issue, then that's something else. If some one who you would rate a 5 is of average appearance that means half the people are worse looking than her/him. Thus requiring a community based ideal of basic required clothing is probably a good thing. If you feel your locality needs more lax clothing laws then by all means get involved. Personally I'm gonna wear what's appropriate and comfortable, probably in excess of required clothing laws of just about everywhere in the USA. And most people are probably thankful that I'm keeping my shirt on when the government says I don't have to ;)

It's a need vs a want.

For babies up til around 1 years, there is a benefit from breast feeding. After 2 years, there is no longer any benefit from the act, but a mere addiction to it, like cigarettes...

So while putting an age to such an act seems to be a slippery slope. You forget that we've got age limit on a billion other things. The line has to be drawn somewhere.

Common misconception. Over half of the colonies were criminals and debtors, not religious pilgrims.
