An interesting opinion article.

I have been awarded a golden ticket to the heart of Silicon Valley: the Thiel Fellowship. The catch? For two years, I cannot be enrolled as a full-time student at an academic institution. For me, that's not an issue; I believe higher education is broken.

I left college two months ago because it rewards conformity rather than independence, competition rather than collaboration, regurgitation rather than learning and theory rather than application. Our creativity, innovation and curiosity are schooled out of us.

Failure is punished instead of seen as a learning opportunity. We think of college as a stepping-stone to success rather than a means to gain knowledge. College fails to empower us with the skills necessary to become productive members of today's global entrepreneurial economy.

I've posted similar sentiments before ...

Education in America is broken.

College is a cultural phenomenon that many people like to go through. It doesn't help the economy or progress the country really.

I think there are way too many colleges and universities, each with different focuses, different mentalities, and different methodologies to over-generalize what "is" and "isn't" done in Higher Education.

I know none of the sentiments expressed in the original post reflect my undergraduate or graduate experiences at all.

Granted, the two universities I've attended is a statistically negligible sample size.... But so was the one university that the student mentioned in the OP went to.

College is a business. It extracts money from as many people as possible and produces an overpriced product with no viable guarantee of quality or reliable use in the real world.

People do collelge to get a job, because it has become a required stepping stone. Everyone has to get it. The quality of it is less important than getting the piece of paper.

So instead of some people wasting 4-6 years, can I just pay my however many tens-of-thousand fee to change my caste? Or maybe stripping out the needless courses for "making well rounded" individuals? College is a racket, and I believe some courses are required as a form of protectionism that keeps needless teachers employed and adds needless expense.

Half of a four-year degree could be done away with if people would learn what they're supposed to in high school.

I'm 2 semesters away from my third degree and I'm pretty much in the 'just a ticket to get a job' camp. I mean, yes I am learning things, but there's no way I could afford to pay 5 digits just for personal interest.

The only thing I've seen done right so far is with my current program forcing students to get an internship before allowing them to graduate. The rest has been pretty horrible value unless you're some superrich person. I've enjoyed my time in school, but until I win Powerball (which I don't play!) I can't say it has any value beyond the "Requirements: Bachelor's[sometimes Master's!] degree in an appropriate field" part of the position listing.

This is also why I don't really believe in celebrating graduations... celebrate getting the job instead.
