I just don't want the team to loose!...was so waiting for that reaction. I prefer the one they did where they asked high GPA students to spread their GPA wealth to lesser performing students. The cry of "but I earned it!" brought laughter to me.

I wonder how many people actually signed the petition.

The black players usually come from worse economic backgrounds, so it's fine that they are over-represented.

Affirmative Action is a **** joke in the first place. The REAL solution here is to get rid of it in all forms, not enforce it for our white devil brethren.

Should have just stopped talking to anyone that said "Yes" to this.

An episode of Different Strokes did this very same thing with basketball and affirmative action trying to argue that it was morally right and because one of the kids got kicked off the basketball team it was all fair because they got a favor someplace else.

I was 7 - I learned to hate affirmative action then and I cursed Mr. Drummond for supporting evil.

They still brag about pushing for more "diversity" in my town. Drives me up a wall. I dont want diverse, I want uniformly well qualified.

In any case, even if you do have affirmative action, it should be based on income levels and not the color of your skin. There's no reason a poor black kid should have precedence over a poor white kid.

Honestly, I'd be 100% fine with redistributing GPA scores. It would not change anything. Your GPA would be lower, but the value of a higher GPA would drastically increase as it would be much harder for someone to get that high GPA.

How much of your GPA do you feel is a fair amount. If you've got A 4.0 you can make do on 60% right. A 2.5 will still get you a good job right?

I'm honestly asking- are you trolling?

It would be harder to get a higher GPA because "they" would keep redistributing your effort. So you'd have to do 4.0 level effort to get the benefit of lets say a 2.8. I'm actually curious as to how you could be ok with that.

If you have to do 4.0 level effort to get a 2.8, then 2.8 is the "new" 4.0. Everyone would see a 2.8 as they see a 4.0 now. I mean, what value do you get out of a high GPA? Stuff like scholarships and job offers, right? Well if they start redistributing GPA points then people will change their expectations to match. A 2.5 won't mean anything, because they know you get it for free, while a 3.0 will be amazing because they'll know you really have to work to get it. I guess it might suck for people caught in the transition before expectations change, but in the end nothing would be different. You'd still get the same reward for the same amount of intelligence/effort.

GPA isn't like money. If you take a dollar from one person and give it to someone else, that dollar is still worth the same. If you take GPA points from one person and give them to someone else the value changes.

There is no point to redistributing GPA, I said that in the first post. That's why I wouldn't be opposed to doing it if it makes people feel better, because nothing will really change.

So a smart kid in a dumb school would be screwed, because his 4.0 would get distributed to a bunch of retards. A smart kid in an above average school would not see his 4.0 reduced as far.

Arathain's right. And even if you just look within the school, the smart kid's excessive GPA gets reduced to the reasonable level of, say, a 3.0, and the 3.0 student looks exactly the same as the 4.0 student.

Yes, but the 3.0 student would also have some points taken away. Not as much as the 4.0 student, but there would still be a distinction between the "4.0" and the "3.0" student that people would recognize. Sure it would probably be like 3.0 and 2.7 instead of 4.0 and 3.0 now, but those two scores would be looked at similarly to how a 4.0 and 3.0 are now. And as for the smart kid in a dumb school being screwed, that already happens. Colleges and/or employers know which schools are "dumb" and take that into account.

GPA just doesn't work in any way like money. The most obvious example is that 4.0 is the maximum possible GPA one can get, and many people get this GPA. Whatever a 4.0 got "redistributed" down to would become the new 4.0, because that number would become the new highest possible GPA.

Where did anybody say anything about redistributing the 3.0 guy's GPA? It's not excessive.

We should do this with sports, too. If you're ahead, you only get 60% of any new points, and the other guy gets 40% of them. He'll get 100% of his.

What, so everyone above 3.0 gets brought down to exactly 3.0? That's absurd. Why would you assume it would work in such a ridiculous fashion? Everything in real life that redistributes based on achievement works on a sliding scale, like progressive income taxes.
