I'm not sure what process one goes through when they decide to write a totally unsolicited monograph on a subject no one really wants to broach in academics, but I think I've reached that point. So, I'm putting this post here in advent I need to verbally eviscerate one of a select few posters for their errant predilections as aesthetes instead of scholars. That said ... Punk is dead. Please stop over-using the term punk. In fact, please stop using the term punk. When I hear reference on NBC to "Steampunk" on the NBC Morning Show; you have gone too far. You have, in point of fact, given to the mainstream media a very curious and intellectually radical socio-cultural phenomenon of the last quarter of the 20th Century. We have been post-punk since 1985. If need be, I am prepared to publish an entire book on this subject. |

I'd read at least the first chapter. It might get repetitive after that. |

I think '86 is pushing it too early. But, yes. It's certainly been dead for a while, and now is invoked by things far too optimistic, cheery, and, dare I say it, mainstream to qualify in a desperate attempt to seem edgy and cool. |

We've had our differences, but I consider you a man capable of great wisdom and intellect. Why you desire to use that intellect to shake your fist at an apathetic world and tell them they are doing it wrong eludes me though. Not saying you're always wrong. I guess I just don't think the same why you do. It's probably why we've been at odds so much over the years. |

why would I buy the book? I get to come here and listen to Khross rant about it here for free ;-> |

Obviously the book isn't targeted at us. It's meant for other, less fortunate people who don't have the opportunity to listen to his rants. |

I thought punk was created by Johnny Rotten to make money off easily influenced young people that wanted to make their parents angry? I never liked punk anyway. |

It's not dead, it's evolved - like everything else. It's influenced and been influenced by other forms of music over time and has changed, been split into different directions, and/or been assimilated into other forms. There is no purity in art. |

TheRiov wrote: Yes, your 60's terminology will undoubtedly flummox me. *chuckles* Actually, simply doubt you would do the required legwork to read a monograph such as those I produce. It's not something that would provide you any immediate material or career-path benefit; consequently, the rational conclusion is you would neither understand nor benefit from anything I actually publish.I have no illusions that my writing is for a very small niche market that does pretty much the same things that I do. |

What about hardcore? Didn't that word become meaningless in regards to describing pre-packaged subcultures with the advent of happy hardcore? |
