My understanding is the pentagon wanted 27k troops remaining but would find a way to make 10k work. They got 3k. Didnt make them happy. Now it's complete withdrawal. We'll see what the military folks have to say.
I suppose any repercussions can just be shrugged off as "Bush's fault".
Soooo...what are these 24k troops gonna do for employment when they get home?
If they were on active duty, they'll remain on active duty.
If they were Reserve or National Guard, they'll return to whatever civilian job they had prior to deployment (it is illegal to fire a person because they have been mobilized until they've been absent 5 years or something like that; no one ever gets mobilized long enough in a row for it to be a problem)
If their civilian employer no longer exists or they had no job, they need to look for a job like everyone else.
My understanding is that Iraq wanted to be allowed to prosecute American soldiers in Iraqi courts; since that's not really likely to result in anything like a fair trial (simply because almost no one anywhere in the world gives enough protections to the defendant by our standards, even if we could count on Iraqis to be fair or impartial) we said Adios.
