... that have been evidenced in Portugal!

Think of the children!

Quote:
Following decriminalization, Portugal had the lowest rate of lifetime marijuana use in people over 15 in the E.U.: 10%. The most comparable figure in America is in people over 12: 39.8%. Proportionally, more Americans have used cocaine than Portuguese have used marijuana.
The Cato paper reports that between 2001 and 2006 in Portugal, rates of lifetime use of any illegal drug among seventh through ninth graders fell from 14.1% to 10.6%; drug use in older teens also declined.

So, wait. Legalizing marijuana reduced marijuana smoking? Perhaps its proponents will rethink the whole idea... ;)

Portugal is one of my main selling points when talking to people about the issue. Things have worked out very well for them.

Well as a counterpoint this is Hillary's take on it:

Quote:
Asked by Denise Maerker of Televisa what she thought of drug legalization, Clinton said it was unlikely to work.

“There is just too much money in it,” Clinton said. “You can legalize small amounts for possession, but those who are making so much money selling, they have to be stopped. They can’t be given an even easier road to take, because they will then find it in their interest to addict even more young people.”

I'd like to see an official respond, specifically, to Portugal's case. Hilary in that quote is just moving goalposts by saying, "think of the children!" That quote is also about legalizing, and not decriminalizing. Pretty different.

There's absolutely no reason for marijuana to not be legal in the US. No reason.

Local dealers would lose out to major corporations that can cheaply grow and distribute it, and even more money would go to the hands of the 1%.

As someone that smokes on a regular basis I'd still be getting it from local mom & pops versus 7-11.

Or grow my own.

If it were legal id be growing it and selling it. Tho I have no interest in smoking it. I like growing stuff and had much success with my tomatoes and Basil.

I think the majority of pot smokers would be growing their own, if it were legal. That would be kind of nice, actually, a little farming community activity and socializing.

My understanding is that it is actually really good for the soil to grow this crop. I'd be tempted just for that purpose.

I think it's also really stupidly easy to grow. I know my cousins got in trouble when they were younger because they tossed some seeds out the window and a little while later they had a plant. Then their parents found it and busted their asses pretty hard.

Meh, if it were legal, I'd try it once or twice, but I've no interest in growing it. Not really fond of the horticultural arts (sorry, Dad :)).

It's really easy to grow, but it's really hard to grow well. There's a big difference between shitty outdoor weed and meticulously grown indoor weed.

Would you also try it if it were only decriminalized?

Because it's illegal the prices are higher and there's more money to be made, you stupid cum dumpster.

I doubt Legalization will really change much for the average Joe Pothead. It might get rid of the cartels though or they would just sell LSD and cocaine instead. I'm not certain.

Decriminalization seems stupid. Either something is legal or it is not.

I tried it a couple times and didn't really like it. Not my thing. I'd rather smoke cigarettes.

I'll pass on both, but it does beg the question why one is legal and one isn't. I understand the answer historically. The more I think about God's word and the world around me the more I realize that my country sometimes seems to be rather inconsistent on our corporate view of sin.

That's why I think these things should be a state/locality decision as much as possible.

Genesis 1:29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.

I guess we're supposed to make brownies instead of smoking it then. ;)

I did my herbal time in college and it was fun but I grew out of it.

The same could be said of alcohol, but there's a lot to be said in The Bible against being drunk. Also sin wasn't in effect when that command was given either. The Narcotic effects some plants may be related to sin, just as the fermentation of grapes likely is.

Ultimately it's a matter of what's influencing your decisions: God, or you own selfish desires.

I understand where you guys are coming from on a personal level but God or the Bible should have zero influence on our law.

Is God or the Bible allowed to have greater than zero influence on their followers?

God/Bible can have as much influence on people's lives as they choose to allow. I think the point is that everyone should choose for themselves from where/what they derive their influences.
