Heh, well, all she's saying is an introduction to the piece, about Obama's visit to the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation Council summit, at which Medvedev, the Russian President, took over its chairmanship. Right before the "bird", she says, "The post was previously held by the U.S. President Barack Obama {bird}." The thing is, it doesn't mean the same thing in Russia as it does in America. I'm sure many folks in Russia are familiar with it nowadays, but if she really wanted to flip him off, she'd have used a different gesture. Something on the order of "curling the hand into a loose fist with the tip or first joint of the thumb poking out between the index and middle finger" (it's called "giving someone the fig"). I suspect that she was just giving a signal to the production crew to roll the tape. Sorry to burst your bubble, but I don't see any big international Obama hate here. |

I'd like to learn Russian, but I'm still busy with Spanish at the moment. Greek, too. |

Nitefox wrote: I had a bubble to burst? Well, sorry, maybe not particularly yours. But, one of the other videos that came up on YouTube after that tried to connect the gesture (a Russian remembering socialism) and Obama. The implication being that she flipped him off because he's a socialist. |
