Spoiler:
Quote:
Congress has just lifted a ban on the slaughter of horses in the United States, which could lead to human consumption of the animals again, the Associated Press reported.

The five-year-old ban was lifted quietly by Congress on Nov. 18, which actually stopped funding for horse meat inspections. Without inspections by the US Department of Agriculture, meat is not allowed to be shipped across state lines, which led to the de facto ban on horse meat, USA Today reported.

The ban was put into place in 2006 after efforts to pass outright bans on horse slaughter failed in the US, the AP reported. The ban was lifted in a spending bill signed by President Obama in hopes to keep the government above water until mid-December.

While there is no US market for horse meat, it is seen as a delicacy overseas in some European and Asian countries, USA Today reported.

While some human-rights organizations decried the provision, PETA has applauded the move, Nashville’s News Channel 5 reported. Many agreed that putting the industry out of business did more harm than good. A PETA spokeswoman said that it is actually more inhumane to ship horses to other countries.

"What we saw were horses, often aging or unwanted horses, being shipped long distances to Mexico and Canada, for horse slaughter markets there," said Tom Womack, with the Tennessee Department of Agriculture, News Channel 5 reported.

It was reported that horses that weren’t shipped over borders were left in bad condition in farms across Tennessee and some were even dumped onto state owned land to roam free, News Channel 5 reported.

However, PETA would like to see an overall ban of horse slaughter in the US and exporting horses to other countries. There is currently a bill in congress currently that could do just that, News Channel 5 reported.

Since PETA is actually pro-horse slaughter, anyone ever knowingly eat horse? How is it?

How could they possibly not be tasty? I don't get the logic.

I'd imagine one grain fed animal tastes pretty much like another.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who went there.

It's been a long time since I had some, so I don't recall it very well. I do remember not being terribly impressed, but thinking it was decent. Can't say much beyond that.

The favorite meat I've had would probably be wild boar, which is awesome.

I can't imagine that any pack animal would taste very good.

Why? There's no such thing as pack animal proteins or DNA. If a freakin mushroom can taste good, then so can a horse.

Not as such. But a big part of the reason that horses, donkeys, etc. were adopted by humans for use as pack animals is because of their physiology. That is to say, they're lean, muscular, enduring animals. And horses, at least, also double as swift transportation and vehicles of war. They're not just strong; they're also fast. Think long, sinewy muscle tissue. That's not so much a good combination from a culinary point of view.

I ate it in the home of an elderly Sonoran street vendor in Puerto Penasco. It was candied and slow roasted, and **** delicious.

Horse is a popular meat in many countries. I hear it is a stronger taste than cow, but perfectly edible. It was a meat used for many years in this country (pre-20th century) and your dogs have probably eaten a lot of it if they eat the cheap canned stuff.

People here don't tend to eat it because horse lovers have lobbied hard against it. If you buy some for the barbecue you might get a revolt from any horse lover you know, especially the young girls.

A lot of folks treat horses like pets, not food animals. There will be resistance. Wait for the next mad cow outbreak and people will probably be more willing to experiment.

That is interesting because Buffalo tastes like **** (imho) with a godawful texture and horse meat sounds like the exact opposite.

I'm sure horse would taste fine. We eat lots of lean, fast animals (deer, elk, rabbit). It wouldn't taste like these, but not necessarily be bad.

I don't see steaks being that great, but depending on the prep it would be fine.

That said, I'll pass.
