Quote:
Seventeen-year-old Jenni Lake had a difficult decision: Battle brain cancer or forgo chemotherapy in order to save the life of her unborn child. The Pocatello, Idaho, teen chose the latter and died of the disease just two weeks after her son was born, according to affiliate KIFI.

Lake, who gave birth November 9, opted to end her chemo once she learned of her pregnancy. Without the treatment, the cancer grew. She died November 22, a little more than a year after her cancer fight began. Doctors had diagnosed her with Grade 3 brain cancer in October 2010 and gave her only two years to live.

Lake’s newborn is being raised by her boyfriend, with the help of her family. In an emotional interview, Lake’s mother said she wished she could tell her daughter how much she loved her.

“I want Jenni here to take care of him,” Diana Phillips said.

2 weeks. She barely made it. She got to see her son before she went. This is one hell of a decision for a 17 year old to make.

What an amazing and brave woman. I hope her baby grows up to be a scientist who cures brain cancer.

Magnificent valor.

Edit: The baby is being taken care of by his father.

What a brave and unselfish thing to do, and at 17 years old. Rest in peace Jenni!

Godspeed Jenni Lake and may your sacrifice let your son live the life you intended for him.

She was, there's no denying that. Although apart from the bravery, I do not find her choice of bringing a new life into the world at the cost of her own any more "good" than choosing to survive herself. It's all about personal priorities. From an impersonal psychological level, that's two separate evolutionary imperatives fighting for dominance: Survival, and passing on your genes to the next generation. There's no guarantee that the chemo would have worked, so this may have been her only shot at immortality. She's now done her part and passed the torch on to another.

If I were her friends/family, this is not the choice I'd have wanted her to make. But it was her choice, not anybody else's.

I agree Talya. I just figured that debating the wisdom of her choice would be futile as we don't know all the detail of how she made the decision as well as the general pro-life stance of the majority of the posters here.

I applaud the decision but this is that grayer are where as I am otherwise pro-life I don't want the government mucking around in the triage aspects like that.

Again cases like this are the tail not the dog of the issue.

I can't imagine being faced with such a decision at that age. Whether she chose her own life or her sons to save, I think it's still a lose/lose situation. Either way, a son will grow up without a mother or a young girl will have to live with the choice of ending her child's life to save her own. Crappy all around and very emotionally scarring. :/

Yes, but if you're going to grow up without a mother, in a way I feel like it has to be better to know your mother loved you this much.

Most if not all mothers love their children this much, just because they were not put into the situation, doesn't mean this child's mother loved them more.

That isn't what he said. What he was pointing out was that if you have to grow up without a mom, it's better to know your mom loved you enough to sacrifice her life for you.

Not all biological moms do love their children this much. While most do love their children a great deal the sad truth is that there is a nontrivial minority that love their children a lot less than their own life - all too often, a lot less.
