http://www.cnn.com/2012/07/11/us/missis ... hpt=hp_bn1 Lengthy article but MS has effectively banned abortions by requiring all providers to A) Have hospital privileges and B) Be an OB/GYN. Reading through it I had a question I was hoping someone could answer: Quote: Mississippi is one of the toughest states for the abortion-rights movement. Its laws require a 24-hour waiting period, as well as parental consent if the patient seeking an abortion is a minor. Seven other states require abortion providers to have hospital privileges, but no other state requires that an abortion provider be an OB/GYN, according to the Guttmacher Institute in Washington, a sexual and reproductive health organization. What kind of degrees/specialities do these providers have if not OB/GYN? |

It's not the OB/GYN requirement that shut down abortions, it's the requirement that abortionists be both OB/GYNs and have treatment privileges at a local hospital. Abortion clinics in Mississippi all have their abortionists commute in from out of state. In-state doctors won't work there, they get way too much **** directed at them, not to mention death threats and occasional assaults. Since they're coming from out of state they don't have local hospital privileges, and the local governments do everything they can to prevent them from getting them. |

On the one hand, ob/gyn seems like a reasonable requirement. On the other hand, it seems excessive to require some form of specialization for every procedure. I probably would have been delivered by my mother's general practitioner, except she went into the hospital around midnight, and I was born at 2am. |

Yeah but you could also go to a regular mechanic and get the job done just as well. |

Where does the idea it's wrong to steal come from? How about to kill? To lie? Moving on, If it wasn't wanted by those living in the state, you'd see a move to change it by those in their state or a mass exodus. Also I don't know what reason I've given you to curse at me. I know it's Hellfire and you are within your rights to do do, but /shrug. |

I wasn't cursing at you when I typed that, it was aimed at the small minority of religious folks that managed to pull off this little stunt in MS. |

We have requirements on what doctors can perform other procedures, so the OB-GYN requirement for this doesn't seem horribly out of line. I might have widened it a little to include some other specialties, but the idea itself is sound. As is the requirement to have privileges at a nearby hospital- sounds like a reasonable requirement that you should be able to treat and admit your patient there if something goes wrong. I think the same requirement is going to hold for outpatient surgical clinics and local hospitals some places. That said, both of them together in this context do put quite a damper on the availability of abortion in the state, so I'm torn. |

Why does Mississippi still exist? Nuke the state from orbit and be done with it. |
