http://www.ocala.com/article/20120716/A ... ?p=1&tc=pg I will say, not enough gun. .380 is about the smallest I would ever consider carrying, and personally would go with a .40 subcompact or a 10mm. |

Dad carries at 10mm, and has been struggling to find ammo for it. |

I carried a hammerless S&W airweight in. 38. That was the smallest caliber id carry. |

I'd say 380 would've been fine if the old man hadn't been falling all over himself. I think this is evidence of the biggest problem I have with CC pistols which is that they are so small it is hard to be on target after the first round because your hands have to absorb all the recoil from the weapon. |

9mm Para, .45 auto, .40S&W, even .380auto and if the circumstances restrict it enough, .25ACP are fine rounds to carry for self defense given proper loading and marksmanship. While more exotic rounds like 10MM auto and .357 Sig offer considerably more stopping power and ballistic performance respectively, there is a big caveat that goes along with using them: cost. I find people I know are more apt to shoot if it's affordable and shooing full power as much as possible is integral to maintaining good skills. That said, 10mm is a hell of a cartridge (Glock 22=0 anyone?) but followup shots are slow due to the nasty muzzle flip. It's like the zip of a .40 S&W but with the force of a .41 magnum. |

I actually want a really small gun for my next purchase. One of those dixie derringers that shoots .22 LR and Mags. It would be for shopping around town issues, for protections against parking lot mugging and the like. IN those cases I figure it would be used in close, and a .22 can do enough damage when put in someone's person. Plus, they are cool as hell.... |
