http://itsybitsysteps.com/mom-banned-from-facebook-after-controversial-breastfeeding-photo/

Quote:
Mom Lauren Ferrari was banned from Facebook after she posted a photo of her 5-year-old daughter pretending to breastfeed her 2-year-old.

A day after Ferrari posted the photo, Facebook sent her a notice saying that she has violated site policies. Facebook not only removed the photo but also banned Ferrari from accessing the site for a week.

“When I posted it, I said, ‘She says she’s nursing her baby’ … She didn’t say, ‘Mommy look, she’s kissing my boobie,’” Ferrari explained herself.

However, police officials are siding with Facebook in this matter.

“That’s something that this family, that these girls, are going to have to ultimately deal with,” Stefanie Thomas of the Seattle police department said, adding that Ferrari was careless and didn’t realize potential misuse of the photo by other people.

Beyond the privacy question is the deeper issue of the oversexualized view of breastfeeding in the United States. Should young girls be aware of the natural concept of breastfeeding? Earlier this year, Facebook had banned a page “Express Yourself Mums” that featured girls pretending to breastfeed their dolls. To push matters further, the public was outraged by the release of the European product, “Breast Milk Baby” which allows young girls to play and nurse the baby doll.

“It’s not sexual and they were just pretending,” Ferrari said. “What’s obscene about breastfeeding?”

With the rising rates of internet crimes against children, there needs to be some checks and balances for parents who post photos of their kids in general. However, with strong backlash against breastfeeding, I almost wonder if the reactions themselves are fueling the oversexualized and almost taboo view towards an act, which is, essentially nothing more than feeding a baby.

Why is breastfeeding so sexualized? Do you get a boner everytime you see someone breastfeeding?? Sheesh!

IMO, one child sucking on the nipple of another child is not acceptable on FB. Also, a week-long suspension isn't a ban.

A pedophile might when he sees two toddlers doing it.

Nothing is wrong when a mother is breastfeeding her child. The difference should be obvious.

No, the difference shouldn't be obvious. That's a product of our culture's obsession with making everything a sexual taboo.

Whatever, man. The fact that some weirdo in a basement could beat his dick raw looking at that picture is enough reason for me to not want those kids online and should be for the mother too. Here's a neat fact: if the photos were private Facebook wouldn't have done ****.

Here's my problem... Why are you breastfeeding a two YEAR old? When Tommy can articulately state, "Hey mom bust a teet for me, I am feeling a peck nippish!" Then something feels bad.

Some women do it a lot longer than that...

Let ban photos of you Lenas for the same reason. Or Porn. Or animals. Or cars. Or people in swimsuits.

If someone wants to beat it to a public picture in their basement...who gives **** one?

Some weirdos beat their dicks raw to pictures of dump trucks. What some weirdos do should not form the basis of what is and isn't sexual.

Contrary to the belief of some a week long suspension is not the end of the world. the picture doesn't offend me, but FB seems to take a pretty serious stance on pictures. Odds are someone who saw it was offended and reported it. Their site, their decision.

5 year olds should not be breastfeeding anyone. Whether breastfeeding should be sexualized doesn't matter; the fact is that it is, and until and unless that changes, small children mimicking it is not something I'd want on my website. Furthermore, Facebook can maintain whatever standards of decency it wants to.

Would the mods here ban someone for posting a similar picture?

5 year olds don't have breasts. I don't see any difference between a photo of a two year old sucking on their nipple or sucking on any other part of their body. Is it okay if the toddler sucks on her finger? Shoulder? Belly button?

OMG this is so retarded. They're just kids, give em a break.

Maybe you can convince American cultural values to stop being retarded somehow. If you hit on a surefire solution, please let us know.

This is ultimately the issue.

Why is this even a discussion? Is it not Facebook's decision on whether the content violates their policy.

Personally, I think such a picture has no place on FB. I can't stop them, but if FB has a problem with it, then so be it.

Personally, I don't think anything has a place on facebook. But I just avoid the site, to each their own.

Well, it depends on the picture and the circumstances. A known poster posting something I consider tasteless or gets reported as such, I'd probably remove the picture and send a PM to the poster explaining my action. If it was a new user, I might ban, depending on if it felt... malicious.

Yeah, I can't really get worked up over this. Stupid picture, but is it "wrong" legally (or even morally)? No (though it is creepy). But it's Facebook's call.

Also, as has been pointed out, suspension /= ban, stupid inflammatory article.

Would it still be wrong if it was the dad pretending to breastfeed his child? I just don't get it...

I don't get it either. American irrationality regarding sexuality doesn't matter. The fact that someone might do something in private regarding any picture also doesn't matter. Facebook likely just made a lot of moms angry...good job!
