Then serving a plain American kid something they don't normally eat would be racist too, right?

Stupid people.

By the time my daughter was five she had eaten at about every decent ethic variety we could find. When her elementary school classes went to various restaurants to experience ethnic cuisine, about once a year, it was all old hat to her and she wondered why the other kids of all races and colors were freaked out by the food she loved.

"Americans eat peanut butter & jelly...“

No ****? What types of students are you serving? No Americans there at all? You saying that because someone's skin color isn't white that they couldn't possibly be an American? That they must eat a certain type of food because that's the stereotype of their race?

What is this, the 1930s?

I'm against reverse racism (and reverse sexism) too. Making a club for every skin color except white is still racism. I long for the day when people will only see people.

Obviously this guy is ignorant. Peanut butter was the idea of a black man and therefore above reproach.

I think you mean Petter, Bjorn, and Johann.

There goes The Man, again, stealing the success of the black man!

Use of the term "white privilege" in an educational setting below at least high-school sophomore ought to be an insta-firing offense. Use for high-school upperclassmen ought to require administrative review to ensure it is not being presented as fact, but as a viewpoint.

I have this funny vision of Azile, TheRiov and RD all removing jars of Jif, Peter Pan, Skippy from their collective cabinets.

Apparently the near broke Portland school system spent over half a million to discuss not only the PB&J racism but such other racist, white culture problems like
Quote:
“rugged individualism,” “adherence to rigid time schedules,” and the belief that “hard work is the key to success” as traits of the dominant white culture.

The new lesson plans are based on
Quote:
PEG teaches that minority cultures value “color group collectivism,” “interdependence,” group success, shared property, learning through social relationships, and making life choices based on “what will be best for the family or group.”

Upon receiving this revelation from PEG, educators are encouraged to create culturally sensitive lesson plans that make use of “group homework preparation,” “cooperative projects,” and “choral reading.”

PBJs are a capitalist given right for every man, woman, and child in the United States of America. Go down to the store, buy your peanut butter, your favorite J and a loaf of bread, get a knife from your backpack and sit in the park eating and sharing your PBJs with any person that wants one, explaining how this demonstrates the greatness of this country.

I have a dream. A dream where little vanilla beans play in the streets with little cocoa beans... Where ice cream isn't judged by the color of its cream, but by the flavor of its ingredients!

Did no one else think this article seemed a little biased? I didn't see any quotes from the Principal implying that he thinks PB&J sandwiches are racist. That's just the headline. This is her quote:

“Another way would be to say: ‘Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that?’ let them tell you,” she told the newspaper. “Maybe they eat torta. Or pita.”

Another way to say what? Something is obviously missing here.

I also don't think it's a bad idea to feed students lunches that appeal to the actual demographics of the student body. I'm kind of stretching my tendency to give people the benefit of the doubt here, but it's hard to judge from this article alone and I think they may actually have a reasonable point underneath all this craziness.

Another part of the article that seems sketchy to me is this "drum circle class" thing. It says it was "set up for black and Latino boys" but it doesn't specify if other races/genders are not allowed in the class, only that that was the target audience.

I'd say the implication that Blacks and Latinos are not Americans is bad enough. As to the PB&J thing, the implication is that minorities only like food from their "demographic". Yet I doubt very much that they'd say the same thing about feeding tacos to white kids. In point of fact, most white people seem to like tacos. There's no reason to think minorities would therefore object to sandwiches.

This article indicates that the schoo in question, at best, has a highly simplistic and condescending view of race relations.

That's because minority culture is *better* than white culture. Of course white kids love exotic, flavorful, and healthy foods like tacos. That's because they don't have to eat their bland, revolting fatburgers and other white food!
