I have defended it in the past, and finally decided this year that it is outmoded. Time to go to popular vote.
I did the math. The only state that matters in this election is Ohio.

They all matter. Some states are just blindly obvious which side of the aisle they are going to fall. There are paths to victory for Romney without Ohio, despite the precedent. I pretty much said everything else I want to say in the other thread we had on this. |

All the states matter. That's what puts states like Ohio in the position they are in. In any case, no electoral college breakdown lasts forever. |

That's the choice of each state. The electoral college doesn't specify how states assign electoral votes. |

If people want the electoral college in their state to be proportional, they should support that. There is no reason to be concerned with how other states than yours allocate their electoral votes, and no reason it should be uniform across all states. |

People advocate against the electoral college as though it's bad. They advocate against stagnation in Congress as though it's bad. Etc. That, to me, demonstrates a failure of understanding about, or a distaste for, the concept of Republic itself. |

every election year the losing side decides it is time for the Electoral College to go, especially if their candidate won the popular vote but not the Electoral College vote. The United States is not a true democracy, it is a democratic republic. I'll vote for it staying that way. |

Everyone in this thread is presenting the issue as a choice between the electoral college as it is now or a popular vote... But what about changing the way the electoral college works so we vote directly for candidates, but those votes are still proportioned in the same way as the electoral college? Why have "electors" at all, especially since most of them are bound. How many of you in favor of the electoral college want unbound electors? |

Unlike America 200+ years ago, most people nowadays are reasonably educated. I think now it is more fitting if the government directly represented the people. The electoral college is unnecessary. |

Again, it isn't a matter of how "the electoral college" works. There is no one system. It just so happens that 48 of the 50 states are "winner takes all". Talking about the system as if it were one national, uniform system distorts the entire point of it. |
