http://www.usatoday.com/story/gameon/2013/02/15/ohio-state-fan-pulled-over-sticker-confused-for-marijuana/1923475/ Quote: Woman pulled over after Ohio St. sticker confused for drug symbol
Paul Myerberg, USA TODAY Sports7p.m. EST February 15, 2013 A 65-year-old woman was pulled over by police officers while driving through Tennessee after the officers mistook her car's Buckeye stickers — those commonly seen on the helmets of Ohio State football players — for a marijuana symbol. "It's just amazing they would be that dumb," said Bonnie Jonas-Boggioni, which pretty much sums up this entire story. Jonas-Boggioni and her husband, Giorgio Boggioni, 66, of Plano, Texas, were driving home through Tennessee from Columbus, Ohio, where they had attended a funeral for Jonas-Boggioni's mother. The two were pulled over a few miles east of Memphis, along I-40, and were greeted by a pair of black SUVs containing officers wearing "body armor and guns," Jonas-Boggioni told Joe Blundo of The Columbus Dispatch. "What are you doing with a marijuana sticker on your bumper?" one of the officers asked. That led Jonas-Boggioni and her husband to explain the meaning of the Ohio State sticker, which is given as a reward to OSU players. To help the puzzled officers connect the dots, Boggioni stepped out of the car to show his 2002 national-championship sweatshirt, one "complete with a Buckeye leaf," Blundo wrote. Chagrined, the officers excused the unwarranted stop by explaining that an officer in another jurisdiction had called in a report of the Boggionis' sticker — believing the older couple to be at the forefront of some sort of massive marijuana ring, it seems. "Police hunting drugs should know that a Buckeye leaf — which has five leaflets — doesn't look much like a marijuana leaf, which typically has seven leaflets and a narrower shape," Jones-Boggioni told Blundo. Well, duh. Before letting the pair off, officers told the couple that they should remove the Ohio State sticker from their car. "I said, 'You mean in Tennessee?" Jones-Boggioni said. "No, permanently," the officers replied. No chance. Have you ever met an Ohio State fan? "I didn't take it off," Jones-Boggioni told Blundo. "This little old lady is no drug dealer." |

I don't think a real mj sticker should be probable cause for a stop. The fact they were swat armed is just coincidental. |

Having a sticker of any kind on your car is not probable cause for being pulled over and detained...its your right of free speech to stick whatever you want on your vehicle. I'm 59 years old, I've tried marijuana maybe once in my entire life, I'm Half-Luddite...and even I could tell the difference between the buckeye leaf and the marijuana leaf. Who were these men in the black SUVs?? |

That story doesn't quite ring true with me for some reason. |

versus Travelling at freeway speeds it is an honest mistake. I have to wonder if their vehicle matched another that was part of a local sting operation. |

It is an honest mistake, but having a marijuana leaf bumper sticker isn't evidence of illegal activity. I notice they didn't mention what agency they were from; whatever agency it is needs to sit down and have some refresher on probable cause. That said.. body armor and guns? duh. Police always have body armor and guns. |

Like someone making up news on a slow day, or someone lying to gain some fame, etc. I've seen far worse bumper stickers in this extremely conservative state, and the police don't bat an eye. Freedom of speech and all that. I suppose. Plus I have a hard time believing the police don't know the symbol for their own state's college team (on top of which even I know that doesn't look much like a cannabis leaf). I smell a lie. |

They're own state college team? This occurred in Tennessee. The Buckeye is Ohio. |

That's true, but I believe people from Tennessee have hear of Ohio State before. |

In my experience with SEC fans they typically can name the 4th string QB on any team in the conference, but can't name the starting QB for teams outside the SEC. I'm exaggerating of course, but not much. It wouldn't surprise me at all if a bunch of cops in Tennessee couldn't recognize a buckeye. In fact I'd be surprised if they could. |

Police always have body armor and guns. Looks like it was the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Shelby County Sheriff. Of course, there is no record of whether or not the stop actually occurred, as there was no citation. |

I'm dubious about this story myself. Did the officer actually tell this person they pulled them over because they had a questionable bumper sticker? I find that really hard to believe.. 1. that they would pull her over in the first place 2. that they would actually tell her that... |

Yeah, now that you mention it there's something dubious about a person who claims to be shocked that the police have body armor and guns. |

Yes but you were not the one who got pulled over. I just think it is funny. Folks with Michigan gear always get pulled over in Ohio... |

I'd say that it was almost certainly the external body armor type that cops wear when going into a dangerous situation and may have had guns drawn when approaching the car. For an elderly couple who's likely only interaction with the police is a routine traffic stop I'm sure it was a memorable experience having two SUVs full of cops pull them over. |

Cops wear external body armor all the time these days because it's more comfortable, and you can hang gear off it which is also more comfortable than having it all on your belt. As for guns, they most likely did not have them drawn, or they'd have performed a felony stop which would have involved the elderly couple being extracted one at a time, placed on their stomach on the ground, and then handcuffed. I'm pretty sure if that had happened, they would have remembered to mention it. Also, the man probably would not have been showing off his t-shirt. |
