They've picked a new guy already.

That was quick.

There are about 2.1 billion Christians (who find the Pope somewhat newsworthy, in general), of which 1.2 billion are Catholics. HTF would it not be news worthy or relevant?

That you concern yourself with animosity toward the beliefs of others to an extent great enough to cause sadness is ridiculous.

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina is now Pope Francis

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jorge_Bergoglio

Once again they chose a Cardinal well into his seventies. From what I'm reading he's somewhat of a conservative as well. I wonder if the Church is going to continue electing aging conservatives until the time they feel they can name a younger reformer, but they're hedging their bets that the world isn't quite ready for a more liberal pope.

So much for leading the church into the future.

Seeing as he's the first pope from the Western Hemisphere, he's pretty different.

Quote:
He is also known for modernizing an Argentine church that had been among the most conservative in Latin America.

Quote:
Bergoglio often rode the bus to work, cooked his own meals and regularly visited the slums that ring Argentina's capital. He considers social outreach, rather than doctrinal battles, to be the essential business of the church.

So yes, he is probably going to try to lead the church into the modern era. That probably doesn't mean what Mus and TR think it means, but he's pretty likely to try to do it.

Quote:
He strongly opposed legislation introduced in 2010 by the Argentine Government to allow same-sex marriage, calling it a "real and dire anthropological throwback".[16] In a letter to the monasteries of Buenos Aires, he wrote: "Let's not be naïve, we're not talking about a simple political battle; it is a destructive pretension against the plan of God. We are not talking about a mere bill, but rather a machination of the Father of Lies that seeks to confuse and deceive the children of God."[17] He has also insisted that adoption by homosexuals is a form of discrimination against children.

Yeah. Great choice. He's perfect.

You need to take a strong stance against homosexuality if you want to win converts in the United States.

Maybe you should consider that the obligation of the Catholic Church is not to pick a Pope that agrees with your stances on matters like gay marriage, seeing as you're .... not catholic.

You also might want to consider that gay marriage is really not the foremost issue of faith for catholics, or for that matter, most Christians. Just because it generates big attention on the news channels does not mean people actually spend much time worrying about it. I have never once heard the topic mentioned in a sermon in a Lutheran church, and I've been Lutheran for over 10 years now.

I get that. And its alright that he doesn't agree with it.

Its his ridiculously inflammatory rhetoric surrounding it that hacks me off. Goddamn dinosaurs.

It takes a long time to train a priest, and it's fairly expensive to do that. There's no reason why any religious organization would ever want to get rid of a priest, short of heresy.

I'm fairly sure you'll get over it. I bet he thinks a lot of your rhetoric is pretty inflammatory too.

To no one in particular. Hence the lack of a quote.

As for you, the fact of the matter is that the Catholic church should cleanup the pedophiles regardless of what it's stance is on gay marriage. The two issues are not related.

Yes, they should. But since there's no chance they're not going to give up their homophobia anytime soon, they should at least put it to good use.

They aren't homophobic. They believe homosexual activity is sinful. However, they do not, contrary to what a lot of people would like to pretend, preach any sort of hate aginst homosexuals themselves, according to official doctrine. For example, Catholic parents are not to reject children who come out as gay. The church teaches that it is still their responsibility as parents to love their children and that judgement is for God.

And as for the pedophilia issue, again, there is no relationship and there is no "putting it to good use." That was just totally silly. Yes, the catholic church has issues. Get off your smarmy high horse about it. Sound familiar?

Your comment led me to have some odd thoughts...

My first thought was to wonder what percentage of Catholic priests would qualify as being part of the "pedo-riddled backyard", then I wondered if "backyard" was to pedo-priests as "gaggle" is to geese, or "murder" is to crows.

Then I wondered what the percentage of folks are pedophilacs, if it were less than or equal to the percentage of homosexuals.

Which led me to the realization that once upon a time, I was a pedophilac myself... Thing is, that's when I was that same age. Yes, when I was a little boy I had the hots for little girls.

Then my mind wandered to the issue of whether or not one can be "cured" of homosexuality, and how the "cure" for my pedophila was just a matter of maturity...

Then I wondered if a group of homosexuals qualified as a "backyard" too, and I realized I'd come full circle.

I'm not sure precisely who you were addressing with this, but I suppose it doesn't really matter. The Catholic Church made a major decision. Some people, including non-Catholics, criticized that decision. No one has said that the Catholic Church is obligated to heed their criticism.

Your annoyance is rather silly. Do I have to be a member of WBC to criticize their actions? Do I have to be a member of PETA to say that I think they're protests are retarded?

Maybe you think that external criticism is irrelevant. I don't. But in any case, "you aren't Catholic, so butt out" is really bizarre card for you, in particular, to play. That's a two-way street, you know.
