Whew! It's a relief to hear that Bernanke "stav[ed] off a new Great Depression" -- with unemployment topping 15% regionally, and cresting a 26-year high nationally, I was getting worried. |

The Bureau of Labor Statistics changed its reporting, again, in August. What they don't tell you about that "Unemployment Rate is only 10.2%" nationally is that people fall out of the institutional population and work force after 4 weeks of collecting unemployment. 4 weeks. Benefits are currently sitting at 30 weeks. |

Well, yes. I knew that, but I didn't want to bother looking up more relevant stats. I seem to recall topping 22% regionally, but if I quoted that without digging up a source, somebody who likes to suck BLS cock would call me on it. |

Okay, just for you, my dear Glade, I have gone and done a bit more digging. The BLS is reporting the U-6 at 17.5% nationally as of the beginning of November. Two excellent articles here and here. The first one discusses the flaws and un-counted situations in even the U-6, and the second one shows some not-so-nice historical data about the U-6, which is a handy bit of context since it doesn't get much press. |
