I had meant to get to this, but It just didn't get done. Part of the Pew study pointed out that while people think Gun violence has increased, it's actually gone down.

Yeah, gun violence is down like 40% over the past decade, but you'd never know that from listening to/reading/watching most news.

I wonder if the folks who dumped her feed are mostly (i) anti-gun purists who think a tweet about gun safety implies that she opposes gun control laws or (ii) pro-gun purists who think a tweet about gun safety implies that she supports gun control laws. Either way...

Despite the occasional mass shooting and some cherry-picked news stories, we are actually becoming a more peaceful society.

But yes, treating mental illness better and proper firearm handling/safety will do more to prevent violence then banning firearms.

Gun violence likely decreases because people are too distracted by the Internet to want to fight eachother in real life.

Actually it probably has more to do with improvements around lead safety than anything else.

Is anyone else annoyed they include suicides in with gun violence stats? Feels extremely misleading.

That's been going on for ages. Back in the 80s or early 90s, Time presented this tear-jerker anti-gun article where they sobbed about the people supposedly killed by "gun violence" in a particular week, by name. More than half were suicides.

Usually, the argument made is that because it's remotely possible that a person without access to a gun might not kill themself in another way, that therefore all gun suicides count as "gun violence".

I believe the argument is that guns are more effective "instant" forms of suicide and therefore less likely that someone will be unsuccessful and be able to get help.

While this is an effective argument that guns are an effective form of suicide, it hardly establishes gun suicides as "gun violence".

Completely agree. I didn't mean to imply that I agreed with the argument.
