I think Anduril was the better of the two items he got for his quest line. Always sharp, looks cool and won't nag you til death. Oh and the ***** outlived him so he didn't even have her death to look forward to.

Of the female characters in the books, Eowyn was the only one I really liked.

In celebration, The Lord of the Rings Blu-Ray Trilogy (Extended Editions) are now up for pre-order. No arrival date yet, but box art is up, so they're pretty far along. Coming this year definitely.

Nah, it's a great moment. It's like bringing in the ringer for the Bad News Bears. It's what makes a race of baddies who have no fear go, "Oh ****, we're ****!" And it reinforced the point about how the bad guys can't plan for everything, and that all it takes is a little diplomacy to gain a powerful and unexpected ally. It's what also happened at Isengard with the ents. And, to a smaller extent, the Hobbits with the Ring.

But in the book they didn't come with Aragorn. They just pushed back the ships and Aragorn freed them. Then Aragorn and company went to join the battle. The Oathbreakers weren't involved.

It wouldn't have been nearly as epic if they made the movie that way. :p

I still contend that Viggo did far more rangering in Hidalgo than he did in all three LOTR movies.

I agree with your general point Numbuk, and thought the movies were outstanding and most of the changes were for the better.

In this case, however, I agree with Raltar. Bringing the Oathbreakers to the white city was a dumb decision, not from a "This isn't following the book!" standpoint, but from a narrative one. It's anticlimactic.

Agree with this. Those first two are way too pretty looking for dwarves.

They actually fit the descriptions of Kili and Fili pretty well.

So does Bombur, in the picture Raltar hates. The other two I don't remember, but Oin and Gloin are cool.

I think it's interesting that Sherlock Holmes and Watson (from the recent BBC Sherlock series) are both cast in these movies, Watson being main character Bilbo Baggins, and Sherlock being the voice of Smaug.

He's waaaaaaay too young. IIRC he and Balin were the only two who were old enough to remember Smaug coming to the mountain. But, on the other hand, he does look badass.

I'm very mixed. Where are the colored beards?

I realize that's a big Dwarf-culture geek question, but I've always pictured those Dwarves with colored beards, and not so much leather and stuff. Tunics and cloaks, that's about all. I don't think any of them had any armor to speak of, really.

I realize, too, that that's the look these days, and a major film can't stray too far from that look. And, of course, it's a look that was foreshadowed (so to speak), in LoTR, so I can appreciate the need for consistency. Had this been done in the 70s or 80s, they'd all be wearing shiny plate armor or something.
