Taste is not in any way a fixed thing, I understand people still buy the pedestrian condiments catchup and mayonnaise though I have no clue why. If Sam like some of the odd bits you don't, it just means his taste in music varies from yours and that is still not a capital offense, except perhaps in your little Balkan kingdom.

Indeed.

Except for Pachelbel's Canon in D. That...well, let's let Youtube say it all.

I'll clarify Khross's ire for the plebians.

Sam posted Pachelbel's Canon in D (the MOST overplayed peice of music in all history. Not saying it's bad, it's just EVERYWHERE), Chopin's Nocturne in E-flat major, and Mozart's Symphony 40 in G Minor. Nothing wrong with any of this music in, and of itself. But altogether you have a great pop-music mix CD for classical fans. Might as well have Britanny Spears, Backstreet Boys, and N'Sync.

Of course, the plurality of votes in the OP have gone to Beethoven's 9th/Ode to Joy, which could easily make the cut for that CD, so perhaps we shouldn't complain. ;)

Good grief.

And perhaps...just maybe...there's a reason certain songs are more familiar to people in general than others. Something about them makes them more well-liked, or perhaps just more well-remembered, than other stuff we don't know from our arses.

There was no ill intent with my post. I find it amazing that a piece of music, because of popularity, is lessened to some of you. I guess the hundreds of times I have sat listening to the same pieces while I majored in music, played the music, performed the music, did theory on the music somehow lessened them to my ear. I am now in shock.....what a fool I have been for listening to them!

As for popular composers.....I am also a fan of Edvard Grieg and Tchaikovsky. Since some of their works are well known and have been played to "death" I should not enjoy them again as well. I'll forgo linking them via YT for you guys....

Pop quiz: When you think of the William Tell Overture, does it begin with the words "With a hearty 'Heigh-ho, Silver!'"?

I believe you mistake "some of us" for "one of us." I was stating Khross's position, not my own.

Except for Pachelbel's canon in D. It can die. :p
I have a general dislike for Mozart, although it's sometimes okay. It's too light and cheery for my tastes. But then so are most of Beethoven's symphonies. It probably shouldn't surprise you that I prefer Mozart's Requiem.

Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture is probably my overplayed favorite. And yes, Shuyung--I see in my mind a man in a Guy Fawkes mask, standing atop a building with a view of the Old Bailey; pretending to conduct it while it plays.

Pachelbel is so insidious, even the rants are being found everywhere.

I'm fairly certain that's grounds for beating the man to death with his own testicles.

Unless he has balls of steel - in which case it would be hard to take them from him and beat him with them - that's gonna be a long and squishy process.

They're all good choices, Sam. I like - no love, and play often - J.S. Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor. Just because it's used in everything from Rollerball to cell phones doesn't mean it's not worthwhile.

If you ask me, you can't really overplay classical music ... except for Tchaikovsky's piano sonata. I hate that thing, for some reason.

One of my favorites.

Mine too. One of my 3 faves to sing. Along with Carmina Burana & the entire Handel's Messiah (not just the Hallelujah Chorus) I know Messiah's very common, but it's still a challenging & enjoyable piece to sing.

Beethoven is "light and cheery"?

The 9th is my favorite from beginning to end. I don't enjoy pulling parts out of it. It just seems.. odd to not listen to it front to back. I also prefer von Karajan (of course I suppose he is one of the most renowned conductors).

Not like Mozart, no. But his earlier symphonies can be.
