The Glade 4.0

I know there are some of you who missed out on the awesomeness that is the Baldur's Gate series, considered by many to be the best PC RPG of all time. Well, gog.com has got both Baldur's Gate(with expansion) and Baldur's Gate 2(also with expansion) for sale now, both compatible with XP, Vista and Windows 7. I would recommend anyone that can spare the $20 do so because these are some of the best games ever released for the PC.

(Pick up Fallout and Fallout 2 there while you are at it)

I remember these games mostly with fondness. (Enjoyed them After I figured out how to keep the NPC with the fewest hip points from trying to tank everything.)

The enforced 640x480 resolution really destroys my ability to play PS:T and the original Fallouts. It's even worse on a widescreen monitor.

I would like to get the fall outs having missed them the first time around. However between eq and a gamefly Q piling up again it seems unlikely.

I tried to play Fallout 1 awhile back (missed it, went back after Fallout 3), and this was what kept me from sticking with it as well.

Jim Cummings rocks. He's one of the most "One of these things is not like the other" voice actors that I know of. He's done (but not limited to.... by a long shot):

- The Checker radio commercials ("You're a man, so you shop at Checker auto parts...")
- Minsc from BG series
- Darkwing Duck
- Monterey Jack & Fatcat from Rescue Rangers
- Don Karnage from Tail Spin
- Winnie the Pooh
- Tigger too

Hell, this guy practically owned the Disney Afternoon.

I still have my saved game somewhere from the end of BG1 just waiting for BG2. At least I hope I still do.

I don't know who this man is, but all of a sudden I love him.

I picked up the first BG, it has been too long since I had played it. And my old disk did not survive the move over the summer.

That stinks. Yeah the original BG had like, what, 5 cds? And all of them were in a paper cardstock case instead of hard plastic. Certainly one of the more fragile things out there.

Heh, I remember reading something looooong ago about people complaining that Baldur's Gate wasn't on DVD, only CDs, and Interplay responding that they didn't feel that there were enough DVD drives out there to warrant a DVD edition...

I remember them saying this about World of Warcraft too, they didn't switch to DVD's until lich king. So many CD's!

All the Collector's Editions, including the first, had the game included on both CDs and a DVD.

And I do know all of the free trial of Burning Crusade were on DVD (which made for great backup copies of the game for people who already owned it).

BG1 was five CD's plus one for Tales of the Sword Coast. BG2 Was four disk.

Fun added side note: Jim Cummings plays the profanity laden evil demon mask in the new remake of Splatterhouse. I knew the voice was familar, but realized when he called me Pu$&y. I asked my wife "Did Darkwing Duck just call me a Pu$&y?"

Answer: Yes. His inclusion has made this game 200% more awesome.

I hear people praising BG2 non-stop. One day, I shall have to check it out.

The story is good, although I don't think the game play holds up over time. It was still fun.

I disagree about the game play not holding up. Actually, I happened to be replaying BG2 when this thread was started.

Play both games or you may miss out on a couple things. Nothing bad but you will have a better understanding of what you see.

I have to agree with this. They really are fun to play. Graphics are the only thing that isn't up to today's standards, really. And even then, they aren't horrible.

Anyway, I have to mention that the Baldur's Gate games have a huge modding community. So those of you that are put off by the fixed resolution of the original, there's a mod that lets you play the game in the BG2 engine that has higher resolutions available. Baldur's Gate TuTu and Baldur's Gate Trilogy will allow this(though I prefer BGT to TuTu).

If you don't like quasi-real time 2e (and then a pseudo 2.75e for II), you'll probably not get into Baldur's Gate.

Looking back, I had more fun writing my character's journal entries than actually playing the game; every time I've tried to get back into it afterward (usually just starting with 2, mind) ends with me getting annoyed with combat before I get out of the first dungeon and playing something else.

Did I mention I hate 2e? It bears to be said.

This. I found combat in both of them to be just ridiculous. The game was for the stories and (at the time) the graphics.

I never played all the way through 1 (although I got close) and never got out of the first dungeon in 2 and don't feel I missed anything.
