Ok so, while waiting for the downloads from hell to finish (seriously, F virtual downloads), thought I'd get some advise.

I'm kinda torn on what I want to play.

I have a 30-something Pally, but unless they ramped up the fun factor with the recent TT revamp, I found that class to be made of snore-o-phyll.

ATM I'm thinking either Hunter or Druid -- Hunter because I generally like the archetype, and Druid because I hear they are very versatile. Either way I prefer a class that is easy to solo with, but still has some use, should I ever get into PUGs or PURs.

So, what do you all think between those choices? Or are there other classes worth exploring?

I like paladin better post-change, personally.

The question I generally ask is "What do you want to do?"

I'll take a look at the Pally when it finally let's me into the game. Course at this point, I probably won't be able to tell.

As for what I want to do:
Well, like I said above I am looking for a class that can solo but still be useful to a group.

I'm generally not a fan of finger-waggling archetypes, but pure tanks and pure healers bore me, as well. I am mostly drawn to "hybrids" or Swiss Army Knife classes.

Paladin is not a snore, though with all the changes to paladin of late, it's tough to say what 30 to 85 will be like.

Druid shouldn't be a bore, but it's got the most diverse playstyle - depending on your spec, you could be a tank, physical DPS, healer, or caster.

Hunter can be boring though it's also fairly easy.

Warlock can be fun, and demonology warlock has some of the same easy factors of a hunter.

Mage can be fun but squishy. You'd need to group up more.

Warrior and then when you can create one death knight can be fun and relatively easy.

I've not loved rogue or priest though with the new priest talents... may try again.

I like shaman though it has some of the diversity issues of druid and paladin.

I find the Paladin to be the easiest to solo with Hunter coming in a close second for ease and generally more fun. Warlock third, Druid fourth. I have ten characters, one of each class, at 80. My least favorite solo classes are Priest and Mage. Amusingly, once I reached 80, soloing with the Mage became a
Cakewalk. However, try them out, see what works best for you.

Yes, you can solo any class to 80, I've done it. It does not mean I know the role or any class in a group or raid though, far from it.

Hmm seem to be running into a technical issue I was afraid of.

It can't seem to retrieve my characters from when I previously played the game. I have a feeling that I need to merge that old inactive account with my new battle.net one. Problem is, I'm not sure what my old account name even was.

Is there somewhere you can go to view a list of your previous accounts, or am I pretty much screwed?

Too vague. Needs more coherence.

I'm being a little snippy because you seem to be in the EQ mindset where, say, a Necromancer wanders around soloing things because groups don't seem to want him. In WoW, every class has at least DPS to contribute to a group, and some can fill the other roles.

The ones that can fill Tank are Paladin, Warrior, Death Knight (have to have something at 55) and Druid.

The ones that can fill Healer are Paladin, Druid, Priest, and Shaman.

Yeah basically classes that aren't gimped in one area because they are buffed in another.

I'm liking Hunter so far, tbh.

Man I wish I could find a way to retrieve my old characters from my previously canceled account. I have a feeling they are gone :/

If you remember their names, look in the Armory on the Blizzard site. If you can find them they are still there. You just have to come up with the account name and password or prove to Blizzard (original game box key) that you own the account.

Unless of course you got banned by a GM, then they are gone.

Yeah checked out the armory and said file not found when I clicked on my Paladin.

Think Blizz axed it . . .

Oh well, chance to start a-fresh.

Characters won't be in the Armory if they have not been logged in since the Armory went live.

Hunters are total *** now -- seriously, worst class in the game by far.

Today you should be able to start one of the new race/class combos, if you are still thinking about what to start playing.

I'm 99.9% sure your characters are there, but I have no idea how you would go about getting them back. I partially want to say you're sorta screwed in the sense that you might have an inactive account vs your current account, and I don't think Blizzard will merge them. You could probably go about getting your old account back through some phone calls (bring something to do during the wait...) but I'm pretty sure your current new characters won't be on there, and you may have to adjust subscription in general if you want to go that route.

But all in all it's a very unusual situation so I don't really know. Just taking some guesses.

As to classes, you can really pick whatever you want. WoW has done a pretty good job of balancing classes in the big picture... though right now with an expansion coming there hasn't yet been time for any dust to settle from the recent amount of huge changes made. It was worse a few weeks ago, especially at low levels, but it may take some time for things to fully settle. I'd have faith that in the end things will be good though.

To that extent, it really comes down to what you want to do. You can either level a few different classes (the world is fairly big and you can do 2 characters without much or any overlap in quests) or level a Druid! ..I'm a bit biased though as I've been a Druid for a long time. They really can do tank, healer, physical dps, spellcaster dps, provided you respec and have a set of gear for that role. You can swap between two specs for free at a higher level, which really puts this flexibility to use... though you can say that about most classes since the majority of classes can do more than one role. :p I'm pretty sure Blizzard even tells you which roles classes can fill now on the char creation screen, actually.

I'd probably suggest playing a few different characters though, despite my bias. :p Especially cause you'd have to play a froofy Night Elf if you were going Alliance... isn't til two more weeks you can make a Worgen Druid, and there are gonna be so many Worgen soon!

Out of curiosity, is there a particular server much the Glade plays on, or is everyone pretty well spread out?

We're pretty much spread out, I believe.

All classes are somewhat like that, because it's your talent spec that decides your primary role/what the character is best at.

There's something like 800 servers (about 600 too many if you ask me.). Unfortunately we're pretty all spread out.

Ah ok. I got some RL friends on Thorium (sp?) Brotherhood, so I landed there.

Graphics aren't quite as bad as I remember them (think there was an overhaul of some the engine fairly recently), but will still take some getting used to.

LOL highlight of the night so far:

A toon named Deadlymanelf sends me a tell asking "Hey wanna be my girl?" (I play a female character)

My reply: "Get your skill in begging up to 10."

Some servers are worse than others, but overall it seems that WoW's playerbase (maybe in other games also) is a bit shallow and immature. You will find a lot of "lolzurbad" along the way. The great thing is you can turn off channels such as tradechat, and put people on ignore.

You will find very little in the way of roleplay in the game. People are more concerned with making gold, getting to max level, getting top end gear etc etc. They are more inclined to seek the end, than enjoy the journey. WoW can also be a lonely game at times, since there are certain times you will be playing solo.....a la questing, farming, etc. It's a rarity that people group, and mostly only for dungeons. Occationally you see them group for harder quests, or group dailies, and when they do it's wham bam thank you maam.

As for the class to try out.....try them all. But to save time, if you want a versatile, viable class all thru your days into end game and PuG'ing.....pick a paly or druid. Those two classes can do everything, and do it well.

Concerning graphics. It was hard to originally go from EQ to WoW for me also. Over time, it feels more normal now. Looking at EQ grahics now compared to WoW, EQ looks horrible. At the time, it felt the other way around. Give it time, and it will grow on you......

One word.....don't expect too much from the game, and you won't be disappointed. WoW is very casual friendly, and very shallow. Long gone are the days of EQ, where the community was extremely important.

YMMV

It is honestly no worse than any other game, by percentage(I would wager, at any rate). There are just a lot more people playing WoW than those other games. So, technically...yeah, there are more in WoW. But I would say when you look at the ratios of assholes to non-assholes, the ratios would likely be very close across all MMOs.

Yeah I can handle MMO fools (in that I pity them).

So far I have a Dwarven Hunter and a Blood Elf Warrior (man WARs are much more fun than when I tried them in the past). That heal strike they get is pretty nice for soloing.

To be fair, I've received the graphics much better this time than in the past, since they've definitely done some upgrades to the engine. It's less pastelly and more vibrant.

Overall, I am (so far) having much more fun with WoW than I ever have in the past. I think some of their more recent changes are to thank for that.

Oh, one technical question -- apparently it's registering my account as "Trial" even though I've started fresh with a full 3-month sub. I think that it may have to do with me merging some old trial accounts I had with my main Battle.net. So, is there a way to "unmarry" old accounts from your main one, or just wait until my trial ends?

WoW has fairly recently undergone a whole bunch of changes to class mechanics in order to make leveling a lot better. Warriors used to be pretty miserable to level for years, but this is no longer the case. Paladins were absolutely miserably boring to the point of not even having much of a real attack, but this too has changed.

And as of today (the Shattering) the level 1-60 quests themselves have been entirely revamped, to the tune of ... well I don't know how many, but over 1,000 quests completely new. I would guess the number is over 2,000 actually... they've said over 3k but that includes the 80-85 stuff too. I haven't spent much of any time doing any of them yet... saw the end of one questline which was pretty sweet.. but the quality of questing in original WoW vs WotLK WoW was definitely noticeable, and I'm pretty sure all the new quests will be of similar quality.

I'm looking forward to leveling up my Gnome Priest very much!

Druids are probably the most versatile class in the game, being able to be very competent at tank, m-dps, r-dps and heals.

With the dual talent system at lvl 40, you can have some variety with almost any class but the pure DPS classes.

Hunter, Mage, Rogue, Warlock can only DPS.

If you want to be able to run randoms (auto-pugged instances basically) you'll have much faster queue times if you play a tank or healer. All tanks and healers have dps offspecs they can use for soloing or questing. Although it's completely viable these days to solo as a tank. I'm less sure about a healer.

My first, original character in vanilla wow was a warrior, I leveled it solo from 1-60. I hope I never have to relive that experience in any form or fashion again. So, so awful.

Then I started a hunter and I said "OHHHH, this is why people think this game is fun, I can kill things and not sit and eat and drink for 10 minutes after each mob!"
