Went and saw this last night, it was pretty amazing. Made on a budget of $15,000, incredibly minimalist and well done. It got 1 million demands, so it is getting a wide release by paramount Oct 16th (it's already in certain cities).

Caution, this movie will seriously freak you out.

P.S. If it's something you're interested in seeing, I recommend avoiding the trailer.

JEALOUS. Been wanting to see this for months now.

I'm so very very happy it hit the 1 million demands mark. Hopefully it'll be coming to a theater near here soon.

On a related note, Phe and I watched [REC] last night. Well, I watched [REC], and Phe watched about three-quarters of it. Then she got too freaked out to continue. :)

It's showing in a few theaters near me, so I'll likely go to a show. Need to find someone to take other than my gf, though, because there's no way she'd make it.

Playing on only 159 screens.

Wow.

Not bad for a 15,000 dollar movie! I'm glad, it was really good.

I'm curious as to why. Could you explain better? Is it cheap thrills like things popping out at you or is it actually mentally freaky?

There aren't people in masks popping out saying boooo or anything, it's quite a bit more subtle.

I'll try to avoid spoilers and still discuss it. It actually works well for two reasons, the first being that it's a master of building tension. Throughout the film there are moments of levity, but almost immediately the tension is ratcheted up to the next level, for the whole running time. The atmosphere is very well maintained. As well, it has NO soundtrack, which is just insane. I don't think I've ever been in a theater with that many people and had it be so quiet, which in itself puts you on edge. The other reason it was so effective was the choice of venue. Most of the movie takes place in their bedroom, which if your house is your sanctuary, the bedroom is your altar. It's your safest place, where you are most vulnerable peacefully sleeping, and having it violated beyond your control is just horrifying. So it's a very mental horror, that's very good at reminding you of those childhood fears of the dark.

I would definitely recommend seeing it in a packed theater if possible, the "communal film" experience is VERY much in effect here, and adds quite a bit to the show.

All I know is that it's two days later, and several of the friends I saw it with called me this morning to see if I was still freaked out trying to sleep like they were (yes, I'm still a bit freaked).
I can't remember the last time I saw a horror movie and had that happen. :)

I've been intrigued by this movie. I've heard that it's gotten an R rating not for violence. Not for nudity. Not for language. Not for drug use. Not for gore. It got it's rating for *intensity.* That's mighty impressive.

I may have to break my "no horror movies during pregnancy" rule to go see this one.

Anyone else seen this yet? I'm still hoping it will come to our town, but some of my online friends saw it and said it was so terrible they almost walked out of the theatre.
I'm hearing people either hating it or loving it.

I reeeeeeally wanted to see it this weekend, but Phe's a coward when it comes to horror movies, and I wasn't going to press the issue on her birthday weekend.

Hoping to see it this coming weekend, though.

Did they say what they didn't like about it (you can pm me if it's spoiler filled)? It does seem like one of those "love it or hate it" films.

It was a conversation on a friend's FB post, so no spoilers and no details. Here is what was said though:

a guy at work described it by saying, if you like seeing people sleep youll probably like this

Yup, definitely a more psychological horror film than anything in recent years. If you don't get into it, probably won't be scary at all. Everyone that I know personally has really enjoyed it though (and been pretty freaked at their next bedtime). :)

I saw the Blair Witch in the theater. I honestly admit that I enjoyed it and got into enough to feel what the director intended for me to feel. And while I know it's chic to pan the movie, I still distinctly remember the end credits rolling and looking over the entire theater to see *everyone* sitting there in stunned, shocked, silence. I could only grin.

I have the same hopes for Paranormal Activities. For those that didn't like it, maybe they didn't WANT to be scared. And to me, that's missing the point of even going to these types of movies. Why go to a Godzilla movie if you don't want to see a man in a rubber suit knocking over model buildings? For me the fun of scary movies is allowing yourself to shut off your brain and get in touch the primal part of your mind the "fight or flight" reptilian part, and let it get into the movie.

It's also my observation that there are quite a number of people out there who really do get very scared by these types of movies, and so have to do things to ground themselves in reality. Talking out loud (a lot), convincing themselves that "it's fake" or "it's lame," or finding other ways to goof around. Many of these people are guys, and they use it to hide the fact that they are wussy fraidy-cats. I take their reviews with large grains of salt.

Now, if a person who enjoys scary movies because they enjoy being scared tells me that Paranormal Activities wasn't all that great... then that's a review I'd pay closer attention to.

How hard is this R rating? What is it for. I can't check from work.

It's for, get this: "Language and Intensity". Haha, an R rating for intensity, if that's not a bullet point on the poster I don't know what is.

Going to see it tomorrow night! Provided my friend doesn't get unduly tied up by the stupid **** football game; damn you, alma mater homecoming! Go ruin someone else's day. May one team lose quickly and decisively.

Anyway, yay!

How is this even possible? that's 44k gross a screen. Presuming an average of $10 a ticket... that's 4400 tickets sold per screen. Average theater size 2-300 people. Lets say 300. 2 days in a weekend, so 2200 tickets a day. this would require between 7 and 8 fully sold out showings for every screen it played on.

Yes.

It's had that kind of response.

Which is why I want to see it so badly.
