Anybody watch the first few episodes? So far, Battlestargate Galactiverse is pretty cool, I think.

I may be biased because I downloaded them, shared them through WMP to my new PS3 and streamed them wirelessly to my new TV...god I love this...but it really did seem to be a good show.

No, there's a new Stargate SG-1 spinoff called Stargate Universe, and Taly's drawing parallels to BSG due to their similarities. I think. I don't watch the show, but I can't imagine that kind of cross-pollination would be the case.

I never got into the whole Stargate SG-1 thing, and Syfy's insistence on milking the franchise thus proves somewhat annoying, but I do remember thinking that from the promos it looked like they were making Star Trek: Voyager and grafting the Stargate IP onto it.

Not quite Riov. Quick review of the new show...

SGC finds a stargate on a planet that has 9 chevrons instead of the 7 for Milky Way travel, or the 8 used to get to Pegasus Galaxy (SG: Atlantis). However, they can't get the 9th chevron to encode, so they make a game with the puzzle to find someone who can decipher the problem (see Last Starfighter). MIT dropout living in mom's house solves the game, is involuntarily recruited to help solve the problem.

The pirate organization from SG episodes attacks the base where the 9 chevron gate is located as the team solves the riddle and establishes a gate. Just before the base explodes, the last of the team jumps through the gate where it shuts off.

After some exploring, they find they are a so far deserted space ship that has been traveling between galaxies for millions of years. Of course, a ship that old has problems, and they spent the first two episodes trying to stave off certain doom in the form of ruptured hulls, failing life support, lack of provisions, etc.

The first two episodes were very reminiscent of the start of BSG, minus the constant jumping to elude the pursuing Cylcons.

Overall though, it feels like it will follow a track more akin to ST:Voyager.

I saw part of the last one where the ship takes them to a planet system, but didn't finish watching it. I have it set to record, but haven't found the motivation yet to catch up.

I did enjoy the original Stargate series, as well as Atlantis, but personally I wouldn't watch SG-U. Stargate SG-1 had run it's course and was winding down when they killed it off. Atlantis was still a viable program that could've run a few more years before it probably would've gotten tired and worn down.

Instead the producers Cooper and Wright said the show cost too much to make, killed off main characters (which happens), but overall were tired themselves of a certain "dated" style. If they were tired of producing ATlatnis Wright and Cooper probably couldv'e let someone else run the show and they could've done SG-U.

Sadly , if the price of the program production costs were a truth, SG-U costs equal to or much more than SG-Atlantis did. I saw a link to a quote that mentioned the production costs were higher than estimated. I do feel bad for the actors and actresses involved in Atlantis as they were led to belive the show would continue on in some form or other, and looks to be like that is also not the case.

I won't say Atlantis was given the short end of the stick. Series like SG-1 that last for 10+ seasons are a rarity, and usually jump the shark in their 3rd or 4th season anyway. Atlantis climaxed well and finished on a high, after 5 seasons. 5 seasons is an excellent run for any show. A lot of successful sci-fi shows (ST:TNG, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as just two examples) were ended by the producers after seven seasons without being cancelled. Bab5 lasted the planned 5 seasons (to the shock of creator J.M. Straczynski) and then was brought to its end gracefully. I much prefer the writers and producers end a show gracefully, than push for those extra few seasons and get cancelled on short notice and leave loose ends.

That said, I wouldn't have minded the SGU team bringing Rodney aboard the Destiny. :)

I have all the episodes to date recorded and just waiting, but my wife and I are in the final push with SG-1 (just finished the first disk of S.7), so we're probably not going to check out SGU until we finish that. Atlantis we're probably going to wait for a bit before we start watching, just because of all the games that are arriving that we both plan on sinking hours into...

So far, I've watched all the episodes, but I haven't made a decision yet. I loved SG-1 and Atlantis, but this has a much different feel to it. The cast really hasn't had a chance to gel yet either. I look forward to when they can stop reacting to problems with the ship and can start looking at where they are and what they can do. I would have liked to see someone from either SG1 or Atlantis make more than just a cameo on SGU.

From all of the commercials I've seen of it, I always thought it was a reboot, not a continuation. I don't watch, that's just how it looked to me.

All stargate TV shows and the movie are set in the same continuity.

Yeah, its more of a case of what to do now... its hard to come up with new "bad guys" that are more powerful than the previous bad guys. If they new ones were that powerful, the previous wouldn't have been an issue.
