Some people think that its ok for their kids to emulate smokers (i.e pretending to smoke a stick or something) and others think its ok but only when they are 5 and "too young to understand" and still others think its not ok at all and that emulating smokers now leads to adult smoking later or something like that.

What do you think?


Personally, I think that its not ok for kids to be emulating smokers at all at any age. Kids even as young as five are creating life-long memories and at that early age already associating pleasant feelings with smoking via emulating the adults they are looking up to and see smoking. My kid tried to *pretend smoke* when he was little and I nipped that in the bud. Then I quit...long process but after a couple quits I'm finished for good.

I just don't think its ok for kids to pretend to smoke, much less for the parent to post pics of the kid on Facebook pretending to smoke and then laughing and saying kids will be kids and he is only 5 he is too young for it to affect him....but hey, maybe I'm just anal when it comes to smoking and kids...which is why I'm asking ya'll for a general consensus on this one.

Smoking is a bad habit and it always irritates me when people complain about not having money, yet they have the money for cigarettes.

Can't imagine why anyone would think it's funny/cute if their child acted like they were smoking. Lung cancer is a horrible way to die and lugging around an oxygen tank when you are 65 because you fried your lungs is crappy too.

I don't understand the addiction of smoking, I know it's hard to quit, and it's a lifelong struggle not to go back. But, it's worth it. How horrible would it be if your kids got lung cancer because of second hand smoke?

I think letting kids act like they are smoking let's them think it's ok. I wouldn't let my kids do it, and it would irritate me that others thought it was funny.

I say no, pretty much for the same reasons as Kirra.

I think it's interesting to see how smokings acceptability has changed as the ratio if smokers to non-smokers has shifted (see Mad Men, lol). Now we don't even have candy cigarettes, but "candy sticks" are ok.

I voted absolutely not. I will do everything in my parental power to ensure that my children never think smoking, whether real or in play, is cool in any way.

QFT. I especially love it when they can't afford bail but they have like 8 packs of smokes on them.

I vote the same as Rori; not ok for my kids, not my problem for anyone else's kids.

No not okay. Even emulating it is basically saying it's okay to do, which (IMO) it's not.

I'm also not a believer in "oh they're too young to know/remember." Children are just younger humans -- they are aware of/retain much more than adults give them credit for.

I'd say yes, smoking is cool, although it happens to be expensive and unhealthy.

For my kids: No
For others: I really do not give a crap. I know I was shortening my life by smoking, and my general disdain for all people leads me to not care if they emulate or engage in an activity which will cause their deaths.

Those people know they are gonna end up in jail... they are trying to get a stash of prison currency going.

I can honestly think of NO other reason to have 4/5 of a carton on your person, unless you JUST bought them, and even then... where the other 2 packs go?

It's proven that starting to smoke in 1970 could lead to your death with 2010 technology, but we can't say the same about 2050 technology.

I smoked 1989 to erm.... 200? I do not know exactly when it stopped, but it was a few years ago. I will be surprised if I make it to see 2050 technology.

I voted for the gay thing. It's ok if he's gay. When you put an option like that in a poll, a substantial amount of people will select it and I like to hop on the bandwagon.

If my kid can't roll a nasty joint and load a bong by the time he turns 8, I'm kicking his *** out.

While I cant say I'd be happy to see a child of mine emulating smoking - I know it isnt a guaruntee of them smoking as I used to do it. They had the best candy cigs at my corner store, they were gum with a paper wrapper, but they sugared the gum under the wrapper so that you could puff sugar smoke hehehe - I loved those things! But down the road I came to the realization that smoking was essentialy just like standing up in a burning building, but more addictive. So I never started smoking. My sis didnt do the candy cigs, she started smoking around 16 or so and still smokes at 32 despte frequent quit attempts.

So I dont think I'd make a federal case out of it if I caught my child faking puffing on a smoke, but I would probably put educating them on the pitfalls of the habit soon thereafter
