The StarCraft thread got me thinking:

What kind of video game endings do you generally prefer?

I generally teeter between mostly happy and whatever fits the game's events.

I really think whatever fits the game is the best. Except for that bullshit Halo 2 ending.

As long as you don't completely feel railroaded and like your efforts are wasted (I'm looking at you, Baldur's Gate!) then a less than happy ending is fine.

Also Game endings pretty much peaked with FF6

Personally, I enjoy any ending that's satisfying and fits the game. However, lately WAY too many games have decided to bank on getting a sequel, and have had crap cliffhanger endings.

As long as there is closure, I don't mind good or bad endings as long as it fits. FF7 had a really shitty ending because there was no closure until they released a movie a billion years later.

Thanks for pointing this out. Isn't it just cool how you can compare FF6 to FF7 in pretty much every way and find out how the modern thought surrounding what makes a good video game just isn't right?

Ending just has to give me something.

You can go with Starcraft and have a unexpected/dark/bittersweet/controversial ending or you can go Portal and have a satisfying if expected ending but throw in a really catchy song for the end credits!

I avoid singleplayer games that have storylines and endings. They always make me feel lonely.

Most video games end like anime series nowadays. Very sad.

Hero has to die. No other outcome is acceptable.

I guess you won't be playing any of the Harry Potter games then?

I have never read a Harry Potter book nor seen any of the movies. I definitely will not play the games. I prefer to keep it that way.

Generally, whether in movies or games, if the hero dies, the entire story was a pointless waste of time.

I disagree entirely. I think more movies and games should end with the hero's death. We could avoid all the ridiculous sequels. Just think if Tom Brady had died at the end of Super Bowl XXXVI. Maybe we could have avoided all the Maddens since then.

You make a compelling point with the madden line. Though sometimes the sequel is a good thing! (And on sequels, what about stories like Mass Effect 2 where the hero dies...at the beginning?)

I haven't played the Mass Effect series, but wouldn't that make him not the hero, then? At least, of that installment.

I don't always think happy is best. I think that if the game's ending completes a well-told story and maybe helps drive home a point, then it can be just as good (if not better) than a "Happily Ever After" ending.

The same goes for movies. Some really great movies didn't end on a happy note.

Spoiler:
For my movie example, the first one that comes to mind is Donnie Darko. For games, Red Dead Redemption.

I kind of look at it from the perspective of what happens to the hero after the story. Okay - he (generally speaking) saved the world. Now what's he gonna do? Go lead a quiet life on a farm? Maintain a desk job and live out a life where their renown slowly dies because they're not doing anything important anymore?

Red Dead Redemption's ending made me feel like the entire game was a waste. Thank god for the zombie addon or it would have been a complete waste of a game.

Really? You must have missed the whole over-arcing story then. Fantastically written with a 100% consistent theme and point throughout, including and especially the very end.
