Alright - pick your top 5 favorite, old school, console RPG's. You're limited to the systems SNES, Genesis, and earlier. No PC games - sorry.

Ready?

And begin...

1. Dragon Warrior - first ever played. Broke me into the genre
1a. Dragon Warrior 2 and 3

2. Final Fantasy (NES) - Solidified my love of the genre

3. Final Fantasy III (SNES) - Still remember the feeling when when Kefka blew up the world. Most amazing gaming moment I remember from that era.

4. Final Fantasy II (SNES)

5. Crono Trigger

Not many options when the ceiling is SNES, bro! Can we count GBA?

1. Secret of Mana
2. Legend of Zelda: LTTP
3. FF 3 (not 6)
4. Chrono Trigger

If we allow GBA:
5. Golden Sun

Yeah, this! The criteria pretty much limits you to three: SNES, NES, Sega Genesys. OK maybe Sega Master System if anyone else had one of those... Do pre-SNES handhelds count? Do all cartridge-based systems that connect to a TV count? (ColecoVision, Intellivision, Atari? TI-99/4A?)

I am limited only to JRPGs?

What about the PC from that timeframe and back?

I've never played an "oldschool console RPG." Almost all gaming I've ever done has been on PC. Cannot participate.

Some of the Ultima games would be valid, as would Pool of Radiance, Hillsfar, Might & Magic 3, and Bard's Tale as they were all on the NES. Ys books 1 and 2 were on the Turbo Grafx 16 (which competed with the Genesis and SNES), as well as on the NES and Sega Master System (I forget which one appeared on which system). Presumably you're not limited to JRPGs, just non-PC games from the 16-bit era and prior.

I never saw the appeal of Super Mario RPG. But, I hate all things Mario.

I enjoyed Super Mario RPG a fair bit!

I put off posting in this thread for awhile for time to ponder but I'm not coming up with any luck. :(

Top 2, alternating depending on mood, are Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger.

I think Soul Blazer comes next at number 3!

After that I'm not sure.

Final Fantasy 4, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore. We'll go with 2 of those 3 to round out the top 5.

Honorable mentions for FF1 and Dragon Warrior 1 for pulling me in. I can still play and enjoy those games, but they were from a different, simpler era and not sure they compare too well to the rest. :p

I have. But ironically, I played all of them on a PC, using an emulator, years after the fact.

A lot of the old school console RPGs I've played were on emulators. Mostly due to the fact that certain games were never even released here. Seiken Densetsu 3 being the prime example. I would have never played this wonderfully awesome game if it wasn't for the internet and emulators.

I despise JRPGs in general, so I wouldn't have any concern over things that weren't released here.

Actually, I have to clarify, most of the "old school" RPGs i played were not on a traditional PC, either.

I played Ultima III & IV, The Bard's Tale I-III, Champions of Krynn, and probably others -- on the Commodore Amiga. :)

Shadowgate wasn't really a role-playing game any more than Zork was.
