Probably. It would be funnier if Imperial (named for the British Empire) was used for the British spelling, though. Of course, then it would imply that we use metric.

Yeah. But I've had to explain to more than one person that it only expands at the transition from water to ice. Continuing to lower the temperature of ice makes it contract like any other normal solid.

I had to debate him in class about it, and he didn't believe me. I even used floating ice as an example.

But it's also probably the single most commonly experienced freezing substance in everyday life, and its exception to that rule has some pretty important consequences that would be used in other portions of 6th grade science. Like density demonstrations.

Expansion of water as it freezes is pretty damn easy to demonstrate. I would also be ashamed of my science teacher if he argued against it.

On a side note : reminds me of a few arguments I had with my grandfather while he was still alive. He believed firmly that the best way to retain the carbonation in an opened bottle of soda was to squeeze the air out of it before tightening the cap. Also, when I asked him whether or not front-wheel drive is actually any better than rear-wheel drive, he said "When you're walking up a steep hill, do you lean forwards or backwards?".
