Odd - something about that video just looks fake to me, but I don't know why.

Also, anyone else wondering if there's an A-frame machine out there that does the top and both sides all at once?

The "fake" look is probably just the camera not having enough FPS to make the spinning blade look natural.

I have to agree on the terrifying description.

There's just something about when the blade is engaged and the engine strains to spin it up.

That thing is just a horrible accident waiting to happen.

Actually, it's more a matter of shutter speed. Longer shutter would work just as well as a higher framerate at making it look natural.

Well, shorter shutter, but yeah.

http://www.mediacollege.com/video/camera/shutter/

With video, shutter speed is synonymous with frames per second.

Nah, I meant slower. What we're seeing is a variation of a stroboscopic effect, so faster or slower would diminish the severity of the effect.

I suppose so. Faster would give a more accurate portrayal of what's actually happening, while slower would blur the blades more so you wouldn't notice as much. I suppose the effect would be the same, since they would both just blur the blades more to show motion :p

What is it about Internet culture that makes people say "welcome ... overlords" so much?

Apparently it originates from the Simpsons: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Simpso ... on_culture

Actually, I was more disturbed by the way the hedge looked after the trimming. Must've been something about my work computer, cuz it looks a lot better at home.

I think it also to do with the exposure time per frame being low enough that individual blades can be resolved. For example even if it is 20 frames per second, the exposure time for each frame might be 1ms.

You're totally wrong. The link does not say this.
Quote:
The shutter "opens" and "closes" once for each frame of video; that is, 25 times per second for PAL and 30 times per second for NTSC. Thus, if a camera has its shutter set to 1/60, each frame will be exposed for 1/60 second. If the speed is increased to 1/120, each frame will be exposed for 1/120 of a second. Remember, the shutter speed does not affect the frame rate, which is completely separate and in most cases always stays the same1.

The effect in the video is clearly from a slow frame-rate combined with short exposure time per frame.

That thing should take off and fly sideways.

I've been meaning to watch that movie for ... well, about 30 years now. I read the book, but wasn't allowed to see the movie when it was in theaters and since my first VCR ownership, I've alternated between forgetting about it and procrastinating.
