I will be leaving WoW for this, and not coming back, provided there's people to play with. A lot of my guild feels the same way.

I haven't had this much fun in a game since Vanguard. Which was probably one of the best games noone played. ;)

Fixed that for you.

Perhaps I'm just a scrub in a scrubby guild... But my first night trying to raid stuff I found Magmaw and the 4 robot one to be ridiculously complex and contrived.

I compared it to a bad GM in a tabletop RPG.
Player 1: Ok, I use my spell on the bad guy.
GM: He deflects it back at you.
Player 2: Well then I use my sword.
GM: He kicks you before you do that and you fly 30 feet into the corner
Player 3: I heal player one
GM: He summons a bunch of friends that come kill you because you healed player one
Player 4: I punch the GM in the face.

Magmaw: Don't stand in the flame pillar and ranged DPS the parasites. Melee melee magmaw and jump on his back when tank gets mangled and spam button. Healers heal people. DPS magmaw once he gets spiked provided all parasites are dead.

That is not complex at all(though, heroic is harder). Unless you are retarded. Which apparently most WoW players are judging by all of the whining that goes on at the forums about heroic dungeons being too hard.

Yes. It is complex. You forgot about the half the room being blocked off, and if you don't have enough ranged DPS you're screwed. Oh, by the way, we nerfed everyone's AoE DPS, except for hunters. Can't spam the button because A) there's a CD and b) you have to target it. Also, there's a shitton of AE damage being thrown out, and if the bugs aren't snared or killed you'll be spawning more.

For a first encounter in a new dungeon, it *is* overly complex.

So...don't stand in the fire is too complex for you? Wow.

Now that one I'll agree with you on. If they hadn't sold out to Sony, and Sony hadn't merged the servers / reset the server-firsts / reset player housing, I'd still be in Vanguard.

Apparently it is. Cause that's all every fight ultimately simplifies to.

Blood Presence
Howling Blast
Death and Decay

Of those, we had a mage, and a bear. The bear was tanking the boss. The mage didn't have the DPS alone to kill the worms before more would spawn.

In any event, its no matter. What it boils down to it WoW is no longer fun for me. Cata provided a bit of entertainment until I found out that Raids would be more of the same overcomplicated crap from ICC that I really disliked.

You don't have to kill the worms. We've got a Frost Mage that can kite them all day long by himself ... ALL of the worms that spawn through out the entire encounter.

Beta 5 complete this morning.

I'm really impressed with how smooth and polished it all ran, and I can't wait for it to go live.

The game feels like they took the good stuff from several different games, and made it just that much better.

I selected a RP-PVE serverfor a couple of reasons. The first is that RP servers generally tend to have a lower idiot population. I'm not really an RPer, but the community tends to be better.

Two factions in the game, the faith-based Guardians and the Technomagical Defiant. I selected Defiant as I liked the technomagical angle. The first class I went for was Rogue. Cause, well, that's what I like. I looked at the soul trees, and I thought that I'd like the Marksman soul. So that was the initial idea. Character creation was pretty straightforward. 3 races to choose from, Eth, Bahmi and Kelari. Eth are the humans, the Kelari are the Elves, and the Bahmi are... um... bigger humans. The starting zone puts you right into the story. The world is ending, and you've been "resurrected" to use a device to go back in time and stop Regulos (the big bad). Basically, you're a technomagical Terminator. After you select your first soul (marksman) you go on a couple of kill x, and interact with y quests. Its a starting zone, what do ya want?

At the end of the starting zone, you're introduced to your first Rift. Rifts are rips in the fabric of reality to the elemental planes (Death, fire, water, earth, air, and life). If you've played WAR, the Public Quest mechanic is back, and its bloody awesome! More on that later though. Some stuff happens, and you go through back in time. At the end of the starter zone, I was Marksman/Saboteur/Riftstalker, and level 6ish.

Rogue plays like rogue in WoW, Witch Hunter in WAR, etc. Energy/Combo Point/Finisher system. Marksman is the archer spec, with ranged talents, saboteur is a support/ranged class, and Riftstalker is a melee class. Played with that combo for a while, and ran through the second zone.

The world feels huge, and there are no flight points. There's a porting system to go from zone to zone, but that's not till later. The first world zone took me from 6 to 20ish. Mounts @20 so travel isn't all that bad. The main reason I think there aren't flight paths is the Rifts.

Which brings us to the Rifts. Every little bit (I don't think they're on a timer, but eh) a rift to one of the aforementioned planes will open up and evil will pour forth. The rifts will spawn packs of mobs which will then attack outposts. The only way to seal the rifts is to defeat the invaders. There are three intensities of rift/invader action. Footholds, Minor, and Major. The footholds are spawned at conquered outposts by invader packs, and the other 2 are actual rifts. The public questing mechanic lets anyone run up and join the action. Some rifts can be closed solo with a little forethought and planning, others will take a group or two or four. Every so often, there's a zonewide emote and a full blown invasion event starts. A quest pops up to close X number of rifts, and stop y number of invasions. At the close of this a boss will spawn and you gotta find him and kick his ***. Everyone is rewarded with loot for participating. Currency, and augments and such. By far, some of the most fun I've had in a long time.

I don't think there's too much more I can go into without breaking the NDA, all of this is publicly available info and whatnot. And I don't want to get all spoilerrific about things.

I played Vanguard, it was fun for a time for sure.

Some of the people I played WAR with are trying this so I'm looking into it now. We'll be playing PvP though almost exclusively. Glad to hear you like it though, encouraging.

Damn so many class combos.

Dash,

There are two more beta periods remaining in the time before release. This weekend is beta 6, and there's another one that starts on the 14th(I think).

I think they still have beta keys @ rift.zam.com if you want to check it out before you buy.

I just pre-ordered the game on a lark to get into Beta and to have something other than WoW to putz with. How far before the beta events do they generally give out the link/download info?

Got my Beta 6 invite just now ;)

I'm on Shadefallen or something like that. I can't recall exactly. RP-PVE. Arafys, Shalea, Fys, and Shalya. If anyone wants to stop by and say Hi.

I got an invite as well but I doubt I'll play this round. I'm paying for WoW and I haven't even logged on that in weeks. Doesn't help that these beta events are so short, either.
