Bishnu Shrestha, a brave Gurkha soldier in Indian Army, defeated 40 train robbers while returning home after a voluntary retirement. The Indian army, is going to awarded Bishnu with Sourya Chakra, Bravery Award and Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha medals during the Indian Republic Day celebration on January 26.

While in the train, Maurya Express from Ranchi to Gorakhpur, on September 2, 2010, 35 year-old Bishnu saved a girl about to be raped by the train robbers in front of her helpless parents. After looting the train, when the robbers started to strip a 18 year old girl in front of him, he couldn’t contain his calmness. He took out his khukari and took on the a group of 40 robbers, alone. In the fight, he killed three of dacoits and injured eight others. Remaining dacoits fled the scene to save their lives.

The police arrested the eight injured dacoits and recovered Rs. 400,000 in cash, 40 gold necklaces, 200 cell phones, 40 laptops and other items left by the robbers while fleeing the train.

In recognition to his bravery, his regiment has given Bishnu a cash reward of Rs. 50,000 and it has also terminated his voluntary retirement, so that he could get a customary promotion after he receives the medals. In addition to that, he will also receive a cash rewards from the government, special discounts in international air tickets, and discounts in Indian railways train tickets.

Moral of the Story:

Don't **** with a Gurkha

It always amazes me how some people are just so much better at fighting than others.

It's not so much his ability to fight as his demonstrated willingness to kill. I suspect the three men he killed were also the first three he got his hands on. The remaining thirty-seven could have overpowered him, but nobody wanted to be the fourth dead body.

That, and watching someone get taken apart by a khukari tends to unsettle people who might be next.

Gurkhas rock, plain and simple.

I have always kind of wanted a kukri, to be honest.

Like Coro said, a large part of fighting is simply willingness to kill, and determination to win. That said, training and physical condition are huge assets as well. In fact, a large part of willingness to kill comes from training. Very few people are natural killers, but almost anyone can be trained to kill in circumstances where they are taught society will approve of their actions.

Not only that, but a knife is incredibly dangerous in close quarters, in many ways as or more dangerous than a handgun. A kukhri is a very dangerous knife too. I'd also be willing to bet that in the confined space of the train only a few bandits could get to the guy at once. After the 11th guy got gutted, or nearly so, the remaining robbers realized that they'd never be able to mob him, and fled.

Forty is enough that they'd manage to tire him out even going at him in pairs. Winning a fight doesn't do you a lot of good if you're dead or crippled, though.

Not to mention, you have to wonder if another passenger is going to get brave enough to help. Panicked civilians can get a lot bolder if one of "their boys" shows them how.

They might tire him out, but it takes an awful lot of discipline and motivation to go get cut with a kukhri so your boys can eventually overwhelm some old guy who has probably gotten smoked so many times in his life that getting tired is just natural thing to him. Robbers most likely don't have that level of "take one for the team."

Is it true that when they draw the knife it must draw blood before being put away?

I don't think that was a problem for him, considering how many people's day he ruined.

Well, I thought that was for the Sikhs and their kirpan, but now that I look at it I don't see anything about that. Probably an urban legend.

If they've never actually *fought*, particularly as a cohesive group, they'd just get in each other's way, most likely. And in close quarters against someone who knows how to use a knife... (Why am I thinking of Kill Bill 1?)

Guess we know where this guy put his weapon proficiency skill points!
