I used to admin an AT&T 3b2 running Sys V realease 3.

It was on an Air Force Base, in South Korea. It was the only device connected to the Internet in South Korea at the time. ;p

If you didn't have an account on it, you could telnet to it, and type 'newuser' at the login prompt, and it would present you with a script to fill out to create yourself an account....

This system was on the open internet (NIPRNET actually) before firewalls, etc.... so few people were connected to anything in any way in those days, that there was no real need for security the way we think about it today...

Used to use telnet some 13ish years ago for a variety of uses, almost none of which were legitimate. But I was a teenager then and I guess it was cool to use telnet to do things like chat on IRC. I certainly didn't have any use for my Slackware installation other than coolness. :p

Otherwise I only remember, mm... logging into some shell accounts people had, and the fun times I had spoofing emails off of The Onion's unsecured SMTP server.

Just as Raltar, I used to play MUDs on telnet.

Muds, alternate way to get into various systems when the web based access is down. Telnet is very useful still.

I suspect strongly I used it quite often in college and before, but... I'm not sure that's what I used. So, I answered "what is Telnet"

Did any of you guys' ISPs offer shell accounts? Mine did for the longest time - they finally pulled the plug after a round of mergers/acquisitions with other ISPs that didn't, and that was probably around 10 years ago. I still have a shell account at work that I use fairly regularly, for that matter.

Yes, I've used telnet, but I haven't had to for years.

Our database engine, Ensemble, uses telnet. If its capable of allowing SSH connections then our senior developers have chosen not to use it for some reason.

I remember telnet as a command prompt window (similar to the old DOS interface) that I had to use to log in during the early days of the internet.

I watched Star Wars over telnet when I was in 10th grade.

I have used, and still currently use telnet. One of the last resorts to accessing one of our devices is a direct serial connection to them. So hyperterminal still gets a lot of use from me.

Stathol, an operations protocol that let IBM mainframes connect with remote terminals. Not sure if any mainframes other than IBM used it.

So, if you ever used a terminal connected to an IBM mainframe, you may have used Telnet without even knowing it.
