I knew exactly where Kaffis was coming from. I can't say I entirely disagree, although I don't think it's the story of their games as much as the gameplay itself. The stories for Mass Effect and Dragon Age were very well done, and the worlds were fleshed out nicely. What I found lacking were the actual games.

Yeah, well...the Dragon Age and Mass Effect "sex" scenes are tamer than what you get on daytime tv. This is an absolutely stupid reason to not play a game and I am completely flabbergasted.

I actually found the gameplay for ME2 to be a very nice tactical shooter. Of course, I don't like action games much, so it's not necessarily a good thing.

DAO on the other hand, the gameplay was much the same as NWN or KOTOR. Can't say the statistics engine in the background makes much difference. It's still pseudo-realtime click-to-hit.

The addition of an ammunition mechanic to a game world where ammunition has become largely irrelevant was a step backwards. They took what was shaping up to be a solid futuristic science fiction rpg and devolved it to a first-person shooter. Allowing all classes to pick locks and open doors was another example of this.

Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 both suffer from a character advancement mechanic that ultimately achieves nothing. Leveling up your character is a zero sum game. You get twenty more hit points? All enemies now deal an additional point of damage to compensate. Your avoidance improves by one percent? So has enemy accuracy. Now, we can present the argument that a long-time staple rpg has the same problem, except that your opposition becomes more diverse. When a 5th level D&D party faces opponents with numbers scaled to their level, more happens than just bigger numbers. Most of them have special abilities that make them both scarier, and different from their lower HD counterparts. In Dragon Age, you are literally fighting goblins and orcs with scaled up numbers to counteract any level gain you might have. It's like a palette-swap to create newer and stronger versions of old monsters, only without the palette-swap. Mass Effect 2 was the same way. Shepard leveled up and got some extra hit points and shields, but enemies chew through it just as fast.

The reason this is such a huge problem is that figuring out what to do with your experience points is one of the most exciting things players do in a role-playing game. Another one is treasure, which Dragon Age has, but Mass Effect 2 lacks. These two elements of the game are just as big a deal as any story or plot provided to the players.

Demo is pretty awesome, guys. Really digging some of the changes to the different styles. I don't feel totally gimp playing an archer like I did in an unmodded Dragon Age Origins game.

Mass Effect 2 has it, people just go out of their way to make sure that it doesn't affect them.

I really enjoyed this change, actually. The first game, you could just sit back behind cover all day long, and win every fight. You never had to be in any danger, or leave your comfort zone. This was even more effective once you unlocked the Spectre weapons. In the second, the "ammo" change forces you out of cover, and makes it much more dangerous. I really didn't have a problem with this change at all. And don't even get me started on the inventory system from the first one. Ugggggg. Don't miss that at all.

I'm not sure what platform or difficulty you played at, but I'm playing through DA:O on Hard right now, and I feel my characters have grown in power significantly. Remember the Ogre you fight in the tower at Ostagar? The one that killed 2 of my party and barely missed taking out me & Alistair. Last night, I took on 2 at the same time, and was never in danger of losing anyone. AND they were with about 12-15 darkspawn. No way would I have survived that at lower levels. It's all about the abilities you choose and how you use them. Also, the abilities and spells seem to scale really well with your stat points, unlike some other games I've played. Maybe your stat points were a little off? Not sure, but I certainly haven't experienced what you are describing in any of my playthroughs.

As far as ME2 goes, it was the same way. My Infiltrator got MUCH better once I maxed out things like Incenerate, Reave, and/or Warp Ammo. I never felt like the enemies were just as powerful at later levels as the lower ones. I always felt like my characters were getting stronger as they went along. I'm really not sure where you are coming from on this one, because that hasn't been my experience on either game, and I've played through both of them in the last month or so.

I wouldn't have minded ammo if the explanation for it hadn't been so stupid. "Oh, you still have unlimited ammo, but your guns need a fresh can of coolant every 12 shots or it overheats forever...".

My car needs coolant, too. However, if it were to overheat I could just let it cool down again instead of getting in another car I'd been towing around (or killing a few guys with another car) so I can loot a couple coke cans full of antifreeze.

Maybe it was good for gameplay, maybe it wasn't, but the lore reason for it was asinine.

Ok, switching gears from all this Mass Effect nattering... :)

Played the demo last night. Very good. The art style change will take some adjustment, but I'm a very continuity-minded person, so this may not be an issue for everyone. I'm someone who's still pissed that Cameron shot ALIENS in 1.85:1 aspect ratio and it doesn't fit with the other three films in the series (having been shot at 2.35:1). :P

The only thing about the new art direction that annoys me is the new darkspawn design. And Flemeth kinda looks...silly.

I was a little taken aback by the darkspawn design as well...they look more like undead skeletons than the Uruk-hai-esque creatures they were in DA1.

I don't mind the new Flemeth design, but...yeah. Had Kate Mulgrew not such a distinctive voice, you'd be hard-pressed to tell it was her. Verrrry different.

The overly-yellow fire also struck me as being a bit too cartoony (I's a mage!) but that's a minor quibble.

That was quite the demo. There was a lot more game play time in the demo than I would have anticipated.

It actually went on a bit too long for me (wow, first-world problems, anyone?). I though it should have ended with the arrival of Flemeth, to end on a higher point and give a better "hook" for the game, but c'est la vie. Not every demo can be BioShock. :)

To be fair, Cameron generally always shoots his movies in Super 35 and it was very-known trait of his. Someone made the decision to crop it to 1.85:1, but be glad for this. If the decision was made to crop it to 2.35:1 you'd be seeing even less of the movie. 4:3 is ironically the aspect ratio that would show you the most of what was shot on film, and is why some people use Jim Cameron's quote "I prefer to watch my movies in fullscreen" out of context to promote pan & scan. Thankfully most of those folks died out.


Edit: Nevermind, I take that back. Apparently Jim didn't start using Super 35 until 89. The more you know.

So I decided to try this and see what all the hulabaloo was about...

seems like a decent game... but click to move? and no way to disable it? That frustrated me to no end during the demo, and I will not buy it without a way of turning that off

I never use the click to move function at all. You can use FPS controls to move around. W, A, S, D works perfectly fine for me. Also, holding down both mouse buttons moves you forward and moves the camera at the same time. So I use that alot, combined with holding the TAB key to highlight all the clickable items you can loot/open/etc. Works really well.

Seriously, try playing it that way instead of click-to-move. It's much better. Also, F1-F4 selects your individual party members, while = selects your entire party. Also very useful for quick commands and making sure everyone is on the same target.

Yeah. I used WSAD to move and mouse to look.

Also, super excited. Tomorrow night, midnight release. Says it will be 27 degrees with a high chance of snow. But I really don't give a ****.
