What has been the worst nightmare you've ever had?
When I was a kid, about 7 or 8 I had a dream that I was being poked in the back by a disembodied finger and I told my parents in my dream but they didn't believe me and sent me back to bed to be poked again by this ghostly finger. It was years before I was able to sleep on my side or my stomach...terrified some ghost was going to get me.
I also had a nightmare in college once where I thought I was awake (could almost swear I really was) but couldn't move and couldn't scream like my body was frozen but I was wide awake and something was coming to get me. Pretty freaky.
This morning I woke up from a nightmare even worse but in a different way. I dreamed I couldn't find my baby anywhere and I thought I had lost her or left her somewhere and woke up in a panic only to realize I don't have a baby...they're both already gone.
Thankfully, I have way more good dreams than bad dreams. To even it out, the best dream I ever had was when I was much younger and had a lucid dream where I could fly and flew over a huge city at night time....it was awesome!

So what's the beat dream you ever had and what's the worst nightmare?

Used to have nightmares about being chased by a being of pure energy.

This is a real thing and it's happened to me more than once.

One word:

Transparent Rambo Gumby Zombies From Hell.

The worst part: I had a shotgun with which to dispatch said Transparent Rambo Gumby Zombies from Hell, but whenever I would try to shoot them, they would be so close that the business end of the shotgun barrel extended past them. I would then run to get distance, but whenever I turned around they would be about a foot away...which was just weird, because when I was facing them they moved very slowly.

I had several recurring nightmares but the only one that truly terrified me makes no logical sense. It was just an image of a football being inverted by the blunt end of a needle--it ended up quasi-Escherish in that it resulted in an impossible physical form, but for hours after I'd wake up I would shake with fear from the image. It followed me through college even.

I suppose this could constitute a nightmare, although it didn't really bother me.

I was in some sort of hostage situation, like a bank robbery or something. Criminals had been apprehended. Some chick had a gun to my head, and DFK is pointing a gun at her. This is made slightly strange considering I don't know what DFK looks like, and I haven't talked to him in a couple of months. Anyway, there's yelling and harsh words, DFK pulls the trigger and shoots the *****. She death-spasms or something and I hear a second gunshot, then feel a warm, wet splatter around the back of my head and everything goes dark.

I wake up pissed off because I don't get to find out what happens next. Although I did have a grim satisfaction that my homey DFK preemptively avenged my death. It was like 5:00am. I briefly contemplated getting up to take a piss, then fell back asleep.

The worst one I ever had was a dream about being back in Iraq a week after I got home. It wasn't actually that bad in itself but... it was right before Memorial Day and idiots were setting off fireworks at all hours. Someone set off a chain of them, the little ones that go off in series, down the street.

I jumped completely out of bed and started looking for my helmet, which of course woke my wife up, whereupon I told her someone had been shot. Then I came to my senses. I went back to sleep okay, but the rest of that summer fireworks drove me nuts if I could hear them but not see them. They still bug me a little, but it mostly went away.

My worst nightmare was my exhusband coming after me. I dreamed I was in bed and woke up to footsteps coming down the hall to the bedroom. I jumped out of bed and ran to the door and locked it. Then he started beating on the door and throwing his shoulder into it, the door frame started to crack. I ran to the window and was pulling it up when he busted the door down. I was standing looking at him when he ran at me and pushed me backward through the window. I felt the sensation of falling, backward, then I woke up with a gasp when I would have hit the ground. It was horrible :(. I still have occasional chase dreams, but they are getting better with time.

Best dream I remember, was when I was little. I dreamed I was a princess in a huge castle and I would go on all of these adventures....like sailing to candy land where we packed the ship with tons of candy trees, candy bushes, vases of pink lemonade and wonderful goodies. Best dream ever :)

Sleep paralysis is at least a weekly thing for me. It has gotten worse since Tricks died, though. As for nightmares, at least once a night, I have a nightmare about snakes at my feet and I wake up kicking and screaming. Those are pretty bad.

But the worst nightmares I ever had were reoccuring nightmares I got when I was really young. It was shortly after my grandfather died and I was having these nightmares where a man I called the yo-yo man was after me. When I think about it now, it was kinda ridiculous. I mean, the dude's body was comprised completely of work gloves in the shape of a stick figure and he had a yo-yo for his head. It scared the **** out of my 4 year old self, though. But something about those dreams would even scare me today. In all of them, the yo-yo man would kill my grandfather right in front of me. It was a terrible thing to experience night after night. But eventually my older brother defeated the yo-yo man in my dream and I never dreamed of him again.

I get this from time to time when I am lucid dreaming and attempt to force myself to awaken, for whatever reason. I've found that if you use enough willpower you can overcome it, but it's definitely a lot more willpower to do that than it takes to become lucid or willfully change your dreams to your wants and desires. So it would not surprise me that it causes panic in most.

I don't remember any nightmares specifically that scared me, as I've always been able to write off dreams as dreams even at a young age. But my active waking imagination gave me several horrifying images that scared me for a long time.

My earliest vivid fear was of a Muppet, actually. I was probably around 3 or 4. I could vividly imagine Beauregard popping up from under my bed and saying the word "Yarn." I don't know why exactly this scared the bejeezus out of me, especially since the Muppet himself was not that frightening to me. I think the fact of the unexpected happening and being an unwelcome surprise is what scared me. Funnily enough, I never mentioned this to anyone before and that image was always my "Prove to me that you're my future self, if we ever meet" verification. I guess I have to go with some of my fallbacks if that ever happens. And yes, I do have some. ;-)

The other thing that scared the crap out of me for several years was the guy from the 70s B-movie "The Incredible Melting Man." This was on basic cable in the middle of the day, and I saw it at my Grandma's house around age 5. A guy catches some virus that causes his skin to begin melting off of his body. It was a horrifying image to a 5 year old (seriously, google it and you'll see no 5 year old should ever see that thing), and I wish I had adult supervision at the time. I had an image of that Melting Man outside my bedroom window for at least 3 more years. I remember specifically wishing, "I can't wait to be a grown-up so I won't be scared of him!"
