I've heard many Pols of all stripes say it's not to take Daffy out. Yet, I couldn't quite figure out why all the effort was being put forth when it wouldn't take a substantial amount more to finish the job. The I see this:

Supposedly this is some sort of "compound" that had some unidntified "military purpose"; Ghaddaffi himself was not the target.

At this point, I'd take this at face value since military dictators tend to mix their military and personal lives liberally.
