For the record, I said you will come off as a smartass, not that you were being a smartass. And I also said that what Riov said, if she's a *****, Taylor is going to take the brunt of it. I was just trying to avoid the crapfest that could ensue though I do think it's pretty funny.

And the farting thing boggles the mind. I mean unless he hiked up a leg and aimed at her, things like that happen. Laugh, tell the kid to try not to do that around people, and move on.

If a school can't keep the peace and keep the children from running roughshod over the teachers and administration by letting them get away with whatever they want, there will be no learning at all.

The opinions here really sicken me. Most of you have no idea of what you are talking about and just keep spouting your anti-public school BS. Just proves to me that teachers are really looked down upon for what they do because they DARE to try and control a classroom of 20+ children so they don't have absolute anarchy on their hands on a daily basis.

+1. Also the whole "**** teh unions!" has become quite grating.

Kids have to learn to deal with twits in their lives by themselves. Personally, I try to never color their experience with my biases.

Please go sit in the corner right now an hour for all the times you farted in school. See you in twenty years,

That calculates to 175,300 farts. If you use 12 years of school, that's 14,608 a year. Finally, using 180 school days, we come to 81 farts a day.

I don't think even I am capable of such a feat.

Or is my punishment one hour for all of my farts in school ever? Whew, because 1 hour per fart is just too much.

Well then, my point is made more valid.

Private institution = even more right for the teacher to discipline as (S)he sees fit.

Therefore, everyone complaining about this teacher's disciplining habits can shut the hell up.

No, a private institution must answer to the demands of the consumers. This means not pissing off parents for scolding a child for making a silent and non-deadly fart that they wouldn't be aware of if the child had not told them.

I would have placed a phone call to the teacher instead of writing a note. Much easier to control the conversation and ensure that your son won't bear the brunt of your disagreement with the teacher.

Depending on how that conversation went, I might also call the principal of the school.

Excellent, When all here that have posted as such have children in private schools and are irritated by a teacher's disciplining of their farting child(ren), then they can voice that opinion. Until then they can still shut the hell up.

Public sector unions in general are a blight on society. Nobody has a right to earn a good living at taxpayer expense. Government will pay what it needs to to get the service it wants to get. Holding the taxpayer hostage with collective bargaining and threats of work stoppage should be criminal.

Outside the public sector, unions have their place. Government protection of those unions do not.

I have nothing but respect for a good teacher, and strongly support the public school system. That said, public schooling quality in the USA is notoriously bad. This is not an indictment of public schooling in general, or individual teachers, but some systemic problems that must be addressed. (And it's not an issue of funding.)

Anyway, as has been pointed out, all those rules go out the window as a private school. If they want to spank kids for farting, fine. I wouldn't send a kid there, but that's my choice.

Isn't the point of sending your child to a private school to have more control over the schooling (curriculum, discipline, activities, etc.) of your child vs. that of a public school?

Yes...but typically this control comes in the form of choosing a school that has policies more appealling to you as a parent, as opposed to the school customizing it to your desires as you go - which isn't to say they won't ever accomodate you, either.

It actually depends greatly on the region. In Massachusetts there are many very good public schools.

I'm not surprised. I've never looked into private schooling here. Our public schools are decent. Although I have complaints (not with the education received, but with other school policies -- such as "nothing that contains nuts or peanuts can be sent with your children to school for lunch or snacks." It's not like nut allergies are more common now than they were 30 years ago. Kids who are allergic to nuts should know enough to be careful what they eat.)

Peanut butter and jelly is like *the* school lunch to grow up on...I can't tell you how many thousands of PB&J sandwiches I ate during my school years.
It's not just schools....there seems to be a growing public trend in punishing the majority because a few can't be trusted to think for themselves.
NF and I were just discussing this yesterday and lamenting the fact that toys are no longer put in cracker jack and cereal boxes because a couple moronic parents let their kids choke on a toy or something and now no one can have any.

Factually untrue.

Beyond that, peanut dust, and even casual exposure to peanuts can be fatal for those with severe allergies. It isn't just what they eat, but the fact that it can come in contact with other things that can be a severe health hazard. There have been cases where a teen died from kissing someone who had eaten peanuts on a sundae several hours earlier.

That's because we're catering to the nut allergies and letting the carriers survive long enough to breed.

I believe the key word is "self-reported". People are far more likely to claim an allergy, or perhaps be diagnosed with one, now than they were in the past. This isn't limited to allergies, but all medical conditions. AIDS, for instance didn't suddenly come into existence in the 80's, but has been a human disease for millenia. We just isolated it in the 80's due to medical improvements. While it's not unthinkable that some things have deteriorated, eliminating a primary component of the human diet to cater to a few people who should already know how to protect themselves doesn't help. And overall, the environment isn't getting worse, the world's not falling apart, people are not getting less healthy. Everything is the same and getting better every decade.
