Cool, reality based advertising.

I'll add it to my list of English-speaking countries I want to visit.

Most places you'd want to travel to as a tourist will have adequate English speakers for you to get by, even if it's not their native language - kind of like Sweden with Swedish.

I know, I'm just making fun of the fact that their advertisement to themselves is almost entirely in English.

Yes, and I was commenting on the absurdity of thinking that using American English instead of Swedish in an ad that makes use of American idiom and advertising styles as it's "point" is somehow noteworthy in a country where an overwhelming majority are able to speak and understand American English.

I can't imagine France doing something like that. It just strikes me as very odd how American-centric they make an ad for their national (non-American) military. So American that they use English.

Then I guess you didn't understand the ad.

It's used to contrast with the Swedish portion to emphasize the patriotism/nationalism (I'm too lazy to keep track of which is the preferred term on this board) of the message to join up.

It's not that hard.

I guess it makes sense for other countries to be so obsessed with the U.S. that they run ads in our language... goes with playing our music.

It has nothing to do with "obsession" with the U.S. They're contrasting their military with the U.S. military because the U.S. military pretty much sets the standards for militaries worldwide.

In English though? That's definitely obsession.

No, it isn't. It's already been explained to you why it's in English.. the allusion to the U.S. is supposed to not be an overt one; you don't see any mention of America, American flags, none of that. The use of English is simply supposed to make it clear what they're talking about without actually coming right out and saying it, since the add is not for the U.S. military, but the Swedish. Most Swedes speak English to some degree, so this makes perfect sense.

Trying to diagnose an entire society as obsessed with another on the basis of a single military recruitment add, when you lack any appropriate training is pretty arrogant.

It's pretty clear to me. When your entire ad is about another country's military, in their language, it shows a certain fascination of them or even obsession. If it's effective then it means the Swedes care a lot about our culture, which is completely one way since most Americans know nothing about theirs, much less speak their language.

It doesn't mean any of those things. It just means that they understand that America's military is very powerful, and that fact is an effective recruitment tool for them used in the right context.

You're just repeating yourself over and over and saying nothing new. There's no good reason to beleive your claim since it is far less parsimonious than the claim that they simply understand how the comparison can make effective advertising.

God dag.

And that's the extent of my Swedish.

No, wait...

Solen!

Unless "Bork Bork Bork" counts?

And yeah it was a cool ad.
