I came across this little essay/journal years ago while checking up on a well-known (I think now defunct) urbex group. It stuck with me for some reason. I was reminded of it yesterday.

Teapots happen, man

Quote:
On January 30th, 2006, I was suddenly compelled to explore the hidden crawlspace under my back stairs.

Now, I'm "Max Action - Urban Explorer" - a huge part of my life and self has been built up around my passion for exploring caves, tunnels, rooftops, basements - spaces between, spaces forgotten, spaces forbidden. And, of course, I LOVE crawlspaces.

They're definitive Spaces Between - hidden away out of sight and mind - voids where people put things to be kept yet forgotten forever - a shadowy Sheol where "the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten."

And my particular crawlspace has great potential, in part because my little house is pretty old - built in 1912.

And this is one of the Weird Things involved in this tale - in eight years of living in the house, years spent exploring every dark and hidden nook and cranny I could find in the Twin Cities area - I had never, ever been into the crawlspace, in my own house.

I'd never even looked into it.

On a regular basis Lex, we get in our own way more than anyone else does.

The Nietzschean Das Ding is largely responsible for the overabundance of stupid people Darwin failed to account for his in his Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection.

I'm more familiar with Kant's Ding an sich; will have to look into this other ding further.

Losing weight is so easy. Just mostly eat food that doesn't have many calories in it, and accept that you'll be mildly hungry all the time. I weighed 166 today. Once I get to 155ish I'll stop. Buying new clothes is unacceptable.

I find your lack of faith disturbing. The ability to destroy a planet is nothing next to the power of the Force.

I was reading the bacon-rose thread and as I was typing my response I smelled roses and I was all "no way! That's an insane psychosomatic response!" and just as I thought that, I looked 6 inches to the left of my nose and saw the rose in a jar that my step-daughter had picked on Friday afternoon. DUH!

Someone needs to be fired in my compliance office, and so does a vendor for Pitney Bowes.

Me too, every year that passes it seems I have another reason to like them less.
