Only one option needed for me. I do not own a handgun.

I have reasons for that. They include:

Subject to great depression. I'm afraid that if I ever get seriously depressed again I would take the quick way out.

Temper, though not so much anymore.

The expense, if I ever own one it will be a good piece of machinery.

Willingness to take it out and practice with it until I get proficient enough to be comfortable with it. I'm not sure I'm motivated enough to do that.

Knowledge of crime statistics, including the one where owners are shot with their own guns.

I have knives and objects that would make good clubs. Anyone who is already armed with a gun is probably going to have the drop on me. Anything less and I can take some punishment before going down.

While I believe in the right to keep and bear arms, I do not choose to exercise it for the reasons above.

I still have the pistol that my Dad gave me...it's currently unloaded in my nightstand drawer. Thank god, I don't have the worry that I have to protect myself, as much as I did before.

My rifle is where I can get at it if needed...along with various knives and blunt objects (ie: baseball bats). I'm a light sleeper, especially when hubby is away.

Anything I use for hunting and/or target practice is also available for home defense. I don't carry as often as I should.

I have a shotgun I use for hunting. I also have a hand gun I take with me just because. I have both accessible for home defense, but that hasn't been much of a concern since I moved to Idaho.

I've target shot with loaners on occassion, but I don't own a weapon.

I thought I was going to be the only one in this thread to own up to at times being dangerous enough to self and others unarmed. I'm glad I don't feel so alone now.

Own 5 firearms. 1 rifle and 4 hand guns. None are setup for home defense and are cased. Used for target practice and recreational shooting. Occasionally I've considered trying to join a shooting league.

I have not shot competitively, only practice. Ammo costs a pretty penny, and I'm not about to throwdown the coin for a reloading setup I have no idea how to use.

I keep my handgun, unloaded for home defense. I used to keep it condition 1 but since I live with a roommate, it's not even loaded and the mags are loaded in a separate, accessible location.

I inherited a large variety of rifles, shotguns, and handguns (mostly varying degrees of antique) from both sides of my family. Most are in good working order, although some are approaching a hundred years old (shotguns), and most are probably well over 60.

My only more recent additions are the .22 rifle I got at 12, and the .22 revolver I got at 14.

I also have a 12 gauge pump and .38 revolver that were my dads, but I'm not a huge fan of either.

For around the farm, I had a .22 semi-auto that I kept loaded with regular rounds, and a .22 revolver that I kept loaded with rat-shot. It was a great combination to carry for snakes and coyotes, although I mostly only used the rat-shot.

I have 3 or 4 .22 long rifles that I keep in shape for target shooting, and although I hunt occasionally, I haven't gotten much of an opportunity in the last few years.

My favorites by far are my two antique shotguns- both are break barrel, a 16 gauge double barrel that was my great-grandfathers (on my fathers side) and a 20 gauge single barrel that was my other great-grandfathers (mothers side).

I also have several German guns that my grandfather obtained during world war II (as well as 5 antique German cavalry swords).

On the even more antique end, I have one of the very early model cap-and-ball derringers, an original model Colt navy revolver (cap and ball), and an antique ladies pearl-handled .22 revolver from the turn of the century.

I've been shooting since I was about 6, and have a great respect for the safe and practiced use of guns.

While I have my two shotguns with me in the city, I don't keep either loaded, and honestly would consider self-defense with a firearm an absolute last resort. I prefer swords and axes. And crossbows.

Most of my guns stay safely stored in a few good gun cabinets back at the farm, where I can take them out and keep up my aim when I visit.

I've been thinking in a year or two of joining IDPA for skills without spending a ton of money. Garden and house upkeep.

As for inventory it consists of a mix of what most people would term "assault weapons", WW2 era collectables (Japanese only), sport and defense shotguns, long range rifle, and a handgun and the obligatory .22 rifle.

I'm in the "Do not own one" category, but I've always considered picking something up. After riots and earthquakes in LA, my wife sometimes brings up the idea of a shotgun. I wouldn't mind one in our earthquake kit for when LA descends into 3 weeks of lawlessness after the big one.

I grew up shoooting BB guns and .22s, some relatives were big hunters, and I had friends on farms with firearms, so I'm not altogether unfamiliar with them. But I hesitate at the time and emotional investment required to be a responsible gun owner. I like to camp in national forests, and even just having something for plinking sounds like fun.

I kind of do want my kids to be familiar with firearms and gun safety, etc., but in our neighborhood that's some "out there" thinking. Thankfully, scouting for my son is still an option, and we can at least get started with BB guns and perhaps move on from there.

I think this is very important... Being familiar with firearms, understanding the proper handling, and soberly respecting their danger is best done through education.

Of my friends, about half grew up on farms (and hunted, and were around guns from an early age), and the other half were city-kids. Anecdotally, all the ones who grew up around guns were generally safe and careful around them, and those that didn't.... Were much less so. If you've grown up around guns, chances are you've also grown up around a lot of very sobering stories about accidents resulting from misuse of the guns. If you didn't grow up around them, you're more likely to be shaped by media... And that's rarely a proper education. Just an observation resulting from a relatively small sample size.

I don't currently own any guns. I grew up on a farm, hunting and shooting (my personal record is two bucks and a doe in the same field in the same afternoon from the same tree stand) with my dad, and I'm perfectly comfortable with them (and a pretty damn good shot). Mainly rifles and shotguns, some pistol work. Tangentially, I've also some proficiency with bows, but not nearly as much.

I'm certainly not averse to guns. They're just not something on which I want to spend money.

I'd probably have one and learn to use it, but I frequently live overseas. Japan has a low crime rate anyway.
