If you can't see the picture, it says if you go to any wikipedia article and click on the first link, skipping links in parentheses, and continue to click the first link in each article, you will always end up on "Philosophy".

So far it's worked for everything I've tried.

It took a couple dozen clicks to get from Orange (fruit) to Philosophy, but it did eventually get there.

Holy cow, it works. 19 clicks to get from "casual sex" to "Property (Philosophy)" with the first link on that one being "modern philosophy."
Huh. How bout that.

Scarlet Breasted Fruit Dove to Transient Medicine - 50 links.

No Philosophy.

Guess I was gullible. Decided not to keep going for the 6 million clicks it might take before the target appeared.

Scarlet Breasted Fruit Dove to Property (philosophy) - 14 links.

What did we do differently?

It doesn't count if you edit Wikipedia for your purposes. :roll:

Vindicarre, we didn't have to do anything differently if the selection is truly random and not a set pattern. If it is a set pattern, I haven't a clue.

Did another random run of 50, from Lists of Songs about Montreal to Wolf, no philosophy. Still think its random, no philosophy preference.

I'm not sure why it isn't working for ya.

go to

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scarlet-br ... Fruit_Dove

click on bird (1)

then the next link should be "feathered" (2) ...don't click on "Bird (disambiguation)" or Aves, or Avifauna. Start at the beginning of the actual article and click on the first link that isn't in a parenthesis.

It should link you to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feather

Then click on epidermal growths (3)

4-filaments
5-biology
6-natural science
7-science
8-knowledge
9-facts
10-information
11-sequence
12-mathematics
13-quantity
14-property
15-modern philosophy
16-philosophy

16 clicks

Yes, it works that way, I thought you were going for random clicks, and that philosophy always came up on the random button.

As it is, you are following a natural path of logic steps that,the way Wikipedia likes its articles written, blazes a trail that frequently if not always, leads to the sciences which lead to philosophy.

Nope, I think what it means by "random" is that you can start at any wikipedia page.

But you must always click on the first link for it to work.

Ahh, it's the first non-parenthetical link, Michael.
I counted: Property (philosophy) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Property_(philosophy) as philosophy, I guess it's supposed to be Philosophy proper..

If you keep going from Philosophy, you get to Alzheimer's Disease, which I find much more eerily appropriate for Wikipedia.

Bettie Page -> American -> Nation -> Nation (disambiguation) -> Nation

Infinite loop!

Unless Nation (disambiguation) is to be treated as a link in parentheses, in which case you get:

Bettie Page -> American -> Nation -> Sovereign state -> Federated state -> Sovereign state

Now, if we're skipping the "for other uses" part...

Bettie Page -> American -> Nation -> Sovereign state -> State (polity) -> Social sciences -> Scholarship -> World -> Human -> Taxonomy -> Science -> Knowledge -> Fact -> Information -> Sequence -> Mathematics -> Quantity -> Property -> Modern philosophy -> Philosophy

On the Property page, if the list were not written in reverse alphabetical order, either of the other two options would lead back to Mathematics creating a third infinite loop.

this got a mention on today's XKCD even
On my first try I started with Albedo

Albedo->Diffuse Reflection->Wavefront->Physics->Natural Science->Science->Knowledge->Fact->Information->Sequence->Mathematics

which then produces the loop:

Mathematics->Quantity->Magnitude->Order Theory->Mathematics

honestly this results suprises me--Philosophy seems like it WOULD come up in this order...

At 19, I ended up in an infinite loop involving 'mathmatics'. Started at 'strained yoghurt'.

There is a "property" link prior to "magnitude"

I should point out, that most (all? I haven't been keeping track) of the things I've tried in Wikipedia have gotten to philosophy via the various languages entries.

So we're not alone when everything in Hellfire boils down to semantics.. Wikipedia does, too!
