Thanks DE. The diameter might be a bit wider than 4.5" as the proximity of the camera I think skewed the readings. I'll try and get a more accurate measurement of the diameter.

I talked with my Aunt and she says that he had it made while he was stationed down in Panama, so my suspicion would be that it was from whatever they were using down there at the time.

If he was stationed in Panama, then it's most likely a 105mm American AA round. We had about fifteen such guns stationed in the canal zone at the time. I was assuming he got it in Japan, and the biggest AA guns we had there were 90mm.

Yeah, it looks like it is either a 105mm or 120mm. The 120mm Gun M1 apparently replaced the 105s in the Canal Zone. I'll work on getting a more accurate measurement tonight.

Actually, just doing some simple math:

120mm = 4.72"
105mm = 4.13"

I'm pretty sure it's the 120mm round.

Here's some simpler math: C=pi * d

I'm just saying, it would drastically increase the precision of your measuring.

Yeah, as long as you have a flexible tape measure. A pair of framing squares will probably do a pretty decent job too.

Can we get some good detail pictures of the M1911A1, Aizle?

Sure, once I pick up a better camera. The digital camera I have sucks ***. It's a double hand me down and doesn't like up close pics very well.

We're talking about picking up a new camera, so that might happen this weekend. Anything in particular that you want to see better?

Well, depending on how comfortable you are with it ...

An unassembled shot would be nice. Also, for your own knowledge, you might want to disassemble it and record the markets on the frame, slide interior, and barrel.

I'm a big fan of older of M1911As. If the all the numbering matches, you can likely get a serial number history from the manufacturer; I also suspect that pistol was made at least 10 years before it was first issued by the U.S. Armed Forces.

Sure, I can do that.

Based on a gun book that a friend of the family and I consulted, it shows that it was manufactured in 1945. I also know that my Grandfather brought it back with him from the Pacific after being part of the Army of Occupation in Japan. I'm not sure exactly when he returned from duty there.

This is actually my 2nd old 1911. My first one is much older. I contacted Colt and based on their best guess, it was manufactured in 1920 or 1921. Unfortunately, some idiot prior owner reblued the slide and ground off all the markings in the process. And it's seen a LOT of rounds down the barrel, so it's definately just a shooter. It had some poor gunsmithing done to it at some point and the return spring was too strong so it would go to half cock or full down after an action. It also had lost the front site, so I had some dot sites put on it when they were fixing the spring. I still need to get it to a range since the repair, so I'm slacking.

I took some pics with our new digital camera, much higher quality than the past one.

For ease of linking I just created a photobucket album:

If there's a certain portion that you'd like to see, let me know and I'll see what I can do about getting a picture of it. It needs a good cleaning, but overall I'm quite pleased with the condition.
