I liked it. There was focus on some different mutants, which was cool. I also think the new guys playing Charles and Erik did good jobs. The story felt .. more serious this time, too.

How bout the recruiting montage? Big laughs in the theater.

Absolutely fantastic. This is the X-Men movie that should have been made 11 years ago, instead of what we got. It's incredible that this was even made, much less made at 20th Century Fox. If you've ever been an X-Men fan, or even just a superhero fan, go see it. Now. Go. Do it!

Edit: the cameos were even great, including one that got the biggest laugh of the night.

Thats really cool you guys liked it so much. I'm hoping I have time to see it when I'm in the city next.

Yes, go see it. Excellent reboot, and don't think it is anything less than a reboot.

I don't see how its a reboot. Nothing in this film violates the continuity of the first three that I noticed. (I didn't see wolverine so maybe the bits with Emma)

The bits with Emma don't jive with her appearance in Wolverine: Origins.

The bits with Beast conflict with the core 3 X-Men films, where he disappears from the team and then shows up in the third film as a "new" introduction.

It's completely nonsensical for Charles to discover Havok before his older (and therefore, presumably, already displaying his uncontrollable mutant power) brother Scott. (This is actually one of the few outright flaws I find in First Class) However, in addition to being a flaw with the movie, it also conflicts with the first X-Men movie, where Scott is introduced as Xavier's first discovery (as he is in almost every continuity I can think of; the manifestation of his uncontrollable power makes it easy to find him without a Cerebro).

While not directly in conflict, the original X-Men movie implies that Xavier's friendly relationship with Magneto lasted longer than the couple of weeks depicted in First Class.

The relative ages of Magneto and Professor X to Beast and Havok (and by extension, Cyclops) are very different between First Class and the X-Men trilogy

Its pretty well stated in the third film that Beast was with the school and left it to work for the President as the Secreatary for Mutant Affairs. Storm greets him very warmly IIRC.


I disagree here. You have to look at the x-men movies as a seperate continuity from the comics. Havok could easily be Scott's older brother or an unrelated Summers (though the related powers imply they're not)--they even have the same color pallate.

Its stated that Scott, Jean the others were 'among' the first students. The list wasn't supposed to be exaustive. There was plenty of time for Xavier and Magneto to have visited Jean in their montage. The fact that they never saw Wolverine's face and the fact that they used the footage from X-Men of Erik's discovery of his powers implies heavily that they are linked.



More like a year. The Jupiter missiles were in Turkey in 1961. The Cuban Missile Crisis was October of 1962.

They didn't use the footage. They carefully reshot it. After watching it, DFK! and I went home and compared. Different actors, slightly different color palette, but carefully (and successfully) staged to invoke it.

My theory is that this is a quiet reboot. They won't come out and say they're rebooting it right away, but they'll keep making stuff in First Class's image, eventually introducing more and more conflicts and overlapping events/timelines until they announce that they've supplanted the original 3.

The reason I figure this is the way they're going is because it makes financial sense. They've got a good story that resonates with fans better and is a more cohesive and compelling plot in its own right for non-fans. And continuing from there will be exorbitantly cheaper than going back to paying salaries for Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellan, Halle Berry, Kelsey Grammar, et al.

Who is, despite his success, much less of a prima donna than any of the above, and commands (or, in the case of Halle Berry, *de*mands, whether she gets anybody to pay it or not is irrelevant) a much more reasonable salary.

I gotta admit, the X-Men trilogy aren't my favorite superhero flicks. I like elements of the first two, but they have been largely forgettable at best, horrendous trainwrecks at worst (X3 and "Wolverine" are blocked from my mind).

This film, however, energizes the series with a breath of fresh air, employing some of the best new actors (Fassbender, McAvoy, Byrne, LAWRENCE!) as well as technically being a period piece, which is always a plus with me.

What I liked:

* The aforementioned cameos. Busted a gut on two of 'em in particular.
* Fassbender's performance. I disagree with the above poster who said McKellen was a bad Magneto; I actually preferred him to Stewart's X. But Fassbender truly dominated the movie the way McKellen could, while at the same time making the role his own.
* Jennifer Lawrence. She should have won the Oscar for Winter's Bone (Portman fans be damned!) and this is just another facet of her talent showing through.
* The story. When it comes to superhero flicks, the story is largely irrelevant (bad guy tries to take over the world, good guy stops 'em, all is well), but the writers actually took the time to write a compelling story that doesn't really retcon much in the original series, making it an effective prequel to Singer/Ratner's films, while at the same time writing it in a way that could easily go in another direction to, essentially, reboot the series.

What I didn't really like:

* January Jones. I love her on Mad Men, but this film really shows how limited of an actress she is.
* The costume design. Retro though it may be, sometimes they feel kind of tacky at best, eyesores at worst. Fassbender's Magneto costume in particular.

Overall, I'd say this film has been the most enjoyable action film of 2011 so far (Thor could do with a rematch on that front, though). If the Spider-Man reboot is as good as this, I'll be satisfied.

Got to admit, have developed a man crush on Fassbender. 300, Inglorious Bastards, Centurion, and now a knock it out of the park portrayal of a young Magneto? Guy has killed in some good roles.

I first saw Fassbender as a minor character in Band of Brothers. He will next feature in David Cronenberg's new film, A Dangerous Method, playing Carl Jung to Viggo Mortensen's Freud. Should be terrific, as Cronenberg + Viggo has not disappointed me yet.

I have not seen the movie yet, and I have some concerns...

1- If this is NOT a reboot... this will put Havoc somewhere between 30-45 ish years older than Cyclops.

2- Even if it IS a reboot.... why for does angel have girly parts and insect wings??
