So I'm reading Julianne Moore's bio on IMDB and I catch this phrase:
In one of Moore's most distinguished performances, she recapitulated her "beguiling Yelena" from Andre Gregory's workshop version of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya in Louis Malle's critically acclaimed Vanya on 42nd Street (1994).
My grammar nazi sense went into overdrive, screaming "she
reprised the role, not
recapitulated it!".
On a whim, however, I decided to look up the word
recapitulate. I expected to discover either that there is no such word, or that it is somehow related to the meaning of
capitulate (logical assumption, one would think), but I like to fact-check when something comes at me unexpectedly like that.
Instead, I discovered that the word does in fact exist and it's meaning isn't remotely related to that of
capitulate.
1
a : to restate briefly : summarize
b : to give new form or expression to
2 : to repeat the principal stages or phases of <the view that ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny>
This wasn't the last thing I expected to find - this wasn't even on my list.
