Oy.

Can we not do this, please?

It's not Moo who is being the drama queen.
He said he was leaving, he revealed what he put in place to transition administration, and then he logged off. Well, all right, fair winds and following seas, I guess.

Then there's a half dozen people or so who feel the need to reenact the ending of Shane.

Sooooo.....we shouldn't be sad or worried when someone abruptly leaves with no explanation whatsoever?
I've invested a lot emotionally in other Gladers since I joined and I kind of assumed others had too...I also assumed it was natural to be concerned when someone cuts all ties with no warning or reasoning.
Then again, perhaps I am wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

Now I have to go watch Shane so I can get the joke.

He could have said "I am going to X" or "I am going on vacation". Making a post that can be construed as emotional which then needlessly riles people up = drama queen.

Sucks to lose members that have been around for so long(especially ones that did so much for us) but sometimes you just gotta go. Take it easy, Mookhow. We'll be here if you ever change your mind.

I am sorry you had to go. If anyone knows how to get in touch with him, I'd be happy to PayPal some money his way for the server cost.

I don't have the strong bonds that others do here and I've never had any desire for Hellfire, which is where most of the chatter happens, but after a decade of lurking, I hate to see anyone feel they need to walk away.

There must be something that was a catalyst, whatever it is I sure hope you can work through it and reconsider.

I would quite honestly hope that someone who is still with us take over the board's costs. Whats the annual figure?

If it's Grid Service from MediaTemple, that's $20/month.

The DNS records are still held by HostMonster, not sure how much that is costing. Dash could answer that, I would think, since it's still in his name. At most $8/month.

Domain registration and DNS hosting is paid for by Dash via HostMonster (they were the provider for the Glade 4.0's original VPS). I'm not sure what it costs him. I think this is being done through a corporate account, so it's probably bulk discounted. In any case, probably not more than $30/yr.

The VPS host is a "(ve) 1GB" (OpenVZ virtual machine) from MediaTemple which Mook pays for. It costs $50/mo. This is probably a pretty good fit for our needs. I've seen memory usage peak around 880MB, and it tends to idle around 640MB.

That's a substantial sum every month, especially for someone who doesn't even want to be here anymore. Can someone else take that over and provide us all with means to chip in?

Do we really need that much for a forum. It seems a bit excessive. Historically we've gotten by on basic php hosting.

Considering we peak at 88% RAM, apparently it's not.

Well the thing you have to understand about the memory usage is that it's partly opportunistic -- i.e. certain processes allocating memory just because they can. Also, there are some things that I could do to reduce memory usage without probably impacting performance.

In particular clamd (ClamAV virus scanning for gladerebooted.org email) uses a huge chunk of memory. About 220MB vs. ~200 total for Apache. I know there's a switch I can add to the clamd init script to limit its memory allocation. I'm not really sure why it's that high. Clamd on my work server is only using about 100MB, and it's far more active and has more available RAM.

Apache itself could also probably be trimmed down. A lot of its memory usage is just mpm prefork ... preforking. I'm not sure that we get enough traffic to justify the number of standby processes that the default Debian/Ubuntu config tells it to keep resident.

Also, we're not exactly peaking at 88%. The VPS has 1GB dedicated, but in practice it seems to consistently have about 1.7GB actually available to it.

Probably, but not much if so. We got the hosting account specifically for this forum.
