Prison would also force abstinence between partners which could procreate. What is the birth rate in prisons? Therefore, it could be readily used to prevent unwanted pregnancies and is an effective example of birth control.

As long as the 2nd Amendment stands, and personal gun ownership is legal, there is no way gun control can ever be effective. Criminals just don't care about idiotic regulations like how long your barrel has to be, what type of ammo you can use, and where and when you can buy and carry your firearms. It only serves to make the honest more honest while substantially inconveniencing them. I can understand why people don't like open carry, because carrying a huge gun around is intimidating, but concealed carry should be legal everywhere. You think someone that plans to murder someone is going to stop and say, "Oh ****, it's illegal for me to conceal my weapon when I go to sneak up on this guy to murder him, I guess I can't do it!"

If people are unable to buy guns, then they won't be carrying them around.

Which runs face-first into the second amendment, which the Supreme Court already ruled confers an individual right of gun ownership.

More importantly thee's already miliions upon millions of guns out there.

Any ban of the sale or of ammunition would likely be ruled a de-facto ban of guns and therefore unconstitutional.

This is patently false. Felonies aren't able to buy guns and yet many felons carry guns around.

They can buy guns illegally from people who can buy them legally.

Given access to a decent machine shop I could make a gun fairly easily if I couldn't buy one. It wouldn't be as good as the ones we can buy now, but it wouldn't have to be in some hypothetical world where you can't buy them anymore...

Making guns illegal only makes it more difficult for normal, law abiding citizens to own them. This would just limit their availability to the black market.

Then you are left with armed criminals and governments.

No trouble is pushing it. Serious criminals or people in certain areas have no trouble, but we don't have too much firearmed desperation crime - or, at least, I'm not aware of it. Wonder if there are reliable per capita stats anywhere...

That also has a lot to do with social differences between the U.S. and the U.K.

It's generally difficult to tell the difference between the two.

Undoubtedly true; but a lack of easily available firearms must have some impact on impulse/desperation crimes, right? Intuitively would seem so. Whether its a statistically relevant impact, though ....

No, not really. Anti-gun organizations have been trying to show this for years, and it is not true.

The main reason it seems so is that handguns are used for almost all crimes where a gun is involved, and a knife can be just as dangerous as a gun, albiet in different ways. A gun is a better defensive weapon, but a knife (possibly a club too) is just as good an offensive weapon, possibly better depending on the circumstances.

People tend to vastly overestimate the power of handguns and vastly underestimate the danger of knives at close range, which is what we're talking about for crimes.

Huh. And the psychological barrier to physically sticking a knife in somebody makes no difference? I wouldn't have expected that. Live and learn.

It's thought to, technically, make a difference, but as a practical matter people who are willing to shoot a person at handgun range but not willing to stick a knife in them are damn rare because you're splitting psychological hairs at that point. People who have an aversion to doing either are really not likely to be violent criminals in the first place.

There's a meaningful psychological difference between killing someone with a rifle, or an even longer-ranged weapon like artillery or a missile, but criminals rarely use rifles and never use heavier weapons outside of places like Iraq or some of the narco-conflicts in Mexico, which really aren't analagous to the concerns about street crime from the average person in the U.S. and U.K.

So? You still haven't addressed the point. Felons can't legally buy guns yet they do so to and walk around with them.

This proves what you said is in fact false.

If nobody can legally buy them, then the felons will have a lot more trouble getting them. I didn't say impossible, just that it will be a lot harder.

Not really. You're forgetting that felons already don't care about breaking the law. ANd people cant really legally buy guns in Australia and England... and felons there still get them. Fairly easily too from what I understand.
